Hurricane Isaac 2012

Tropical storms have caused major damage around the world in the past decade and has caused many “Tropical Storm Prone” areas to take precautions. It appears that another tropical storm named Isaac, may turn into a hurricane and hit the Tampa, FL area. The storm has already dropped up to 20 inches of rain around Puerto Rico and the Eastern Caribbean Islands prompting Puerto Rico Governor Luis Fortuno to declared a state of emergency, canceled classes, close government agencies and activate the National Guard according to NBC News.

Researchers have said that it may be too early to determine if Isaac will have a direct impact on the Tampa area, but all indications suggest it will hit the area within the next few days. This may be a cause for concern for more than just the Tampa residents as the Republican National Convention is to run from Monday through Thursday in Tampa.

“The safety of my residents, our guests and visitors is my number one concern at this point,” Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn told FoxNews on Wednesday.

Buckhorn also mentioned that he is absolutely prepared to call off the convention for the safety of everyone in the city, but explained that it’s the Republican National Committee, not him that gets to makes the call on whether the convention goes forward as scheduled.

“We are working closely with our partners at the federal, state and local levels to monitor the tropical storm weather, we have plans in place to ensure the health and safety of convention delegates, guests and visitors, along with the Tampa Bay community,” Republican National Convention planners said in a statement

“We are still keeping an open mind and are looking forward to a great convention,” RNC planners said.

As of today tropical storm Isaac is at least 100 miles away from Florida so there is still time for it to miss the coastline state, but unfortunately the storm is getting stronger everyday as the storm winds are up to 45 mph now. Isaac is expected to turn from a tropical storm into a hurricane in-between Cuba and Florida sometime in the next few days.

If Isaac hits the Tampa area it will be the second hurricane to strike the area in the last 8 years, Hurricane Jeanne did minor damage and took three lives back in 2004.

RNC Will Make Own Decision on Isaac

Florida Gov. Rick Scott says national Republican Party officials will decide whether to cancel or delay the upcoming national convention due to the threat from Tropical Storm Isaac.
