Toyota Prius Brake Recall

Toyota is recalling about 242,000 Prius and Lexus hybrid vehicles due to braking problems.

Toyota said on Wednesday the recall affects about 233,000 Prius vehicles made between March and October 2009 and about 9,000 Lexus HS250h models made between June and October 2009.

Toyota said they have received more than 90 complaints from drivers who said they needed to step more heavily on the brake pedal than usual. Which sent red flags to Toyota to check things out.

A spokeswoman said a flaw was allowing nitrogen gas to leak into the brake fluid and brake pressure parts could crack due to vibration, slowing response times, reducing the effectiveness of the brakes. There have been no reports of accidents or injuries.

Most of the cars being recalled are in Japan where 117,000 vehicles are affected, following 91,000 recalled in North America, 30,000 in Europe and smaller numbers in other countries.

According to a news release, Toyota will mail notifications to affected owners.  Dealers will inspect the brake booster pump assembly to see if it is equipped with an involved accumulator. If so, the dealers will replace the brake booster pump assembly for no charge.

End of March numbers show the company had sold about 5.1 million hybrid vehicles globally, including 3.6 million Prius vehicles, since it went on sale in December 1997.

Toyota has been in recent spotlight with reliability and safety after a series of recalls affecting millions of vehicles in recent years.
