Dr. Oz broke down the newest trend in weight loss, the Paleo diet in his April 22, 2013 show.
The Paleo Diet, according to Dr. Loren Cordain author of “The Paleo Diet”, is high in protein and low-glycemic. She believes it’s the best diet to lose weight on because it incorporates a lot of fruits, veggies, and omega-3s to help lessen inflammation of the body.
It’s also known as the “caveman diet.” The Paleo diet is based on the idea that our bodies have not adapted to eat foods that weren’t available 10,000 years ago and focuses on eating meat, fruits and vegetables, all the while avoiding grains and dairy.
The Paleo Diet is based upon extensive scientific research examining the types and quantities of foods our hunter-gatherer ancestors ate. The foundation of the Paleo Diet is meat, seafood, and unlimited consumption of fresh fruits and veggies.
It encourages dieters to replace dairy and grain products with fresh fruits and vegetables – foods that are more nutritious than whole grains or dairy products.
Dr. Oz questioned whether this is another diet fad. Cordain says no. Unlike the Atkins Diet, the Paleo Diet is not just another low-carb diet. You aren’t restricted in what you eat, rather you eat a balanced meal.
Cordain went on to explain that the Paleo Diet focuses on lean proteins and vegetables that are low on the glycemic index so you don’t have any sugar spikes in your blood. She says that inflammation is the reason why we are not healthy in today’s world. For many, being on the Paleo diet has helped reduce heart disease.
The Paleo diet is designed to keep inflammation low and to allow the body to function. The reason it’s helped keep inflammation low is from staying away from food that causes it which include milk and many other things like grains, legumes, and refined sugars.
New research has shown the Paleo Diet is helpful for people in reducing cardiovascular risk factors. The diet includes foods like fish, eggs, chicken, turkey, bison, duck, assorted fruits and vegetables, nuts and olive oil. These choices provide a rich supply of vitamins, nutrients and antioxidants.
Paleo Diet Food List:
- Grass-fed beef
- Wild salmon
- Healthy fats – coconut oil, avocados
- Raw nuts in moderation
- No dairy
- No grains
- No legumes
- No refined sugars
Paleo diet consists of each meal having 2/3 of your plate full of fresh vegetables, one palm sized portion of lean protein, a small portion of healthy fat, and a handful of fruit.
The nice thing about this diet, you don’t need to count calories. It’s all about the balance meal, basically if it comes prewrapped in plastic or in other container, it’s not Paleo.
Also, there’s cheat days involved with the Paleo diet. Everyone enjoys breaking the rules every once in awhile. You still get the benefits of the Paleo Diet by following it 85% of the time. A full 100% commitment is ideal for 30 days but can be a difficult transition which is why it allows for cheating. Indulge three meals a week. Feel free to enjoy a glass of wine or a piece of cake. Paleo is a lifestyle, not a fad diet.
