An Ohio teenager was arrested on animal cruelty charges after a video showing him kicking a cat went viral.
Police say 18-year-old Tre’vonte Mitchell admitted to assaulting the stray cat August 6 while he and a friend, Roy Hill walked along Buchtel Avenue in Northeast Ohio.
Hill recorded Mitchell kicking the cat and put it on Facebook.
The video showed the cat being kicked into the air about 3 feet and landing on the sidewalk and then running away.
Mitchell was seen laughing, and Hill could be heard chuckling.
“He told us he doesn’t know why he did it,” Akron Police Captain Dan Zampelli. “He says he just saw it, picked it up and kicked it.” He allegedly feels remorse for doing so.
The incident sparked outrage on Social Media from thousands of users, including the Ohio Animal Abuser List, which shared the video on its Facebook page to raise awareness.
Kim Patterson said, “Stupid low life. So is the guy behind the camera. Hope the cat is okay, and pray the idiots get what they deserve in prison.”
Christy Smith Huntington adds, “Both of them are dirt bags! Makes me sick.”
Rita Anderson Fix says, “Total jerk.. And stand there and laugh about it afterwards.. I hope they find him and throw away the key.”
The video eventually prompted a police and Humane Society investigation.
Tre’vonte Mitchell was arrested Wednesday, according to the Akron Beacon Journal. He could face six months in jail and a $1,000 fine if convicted. According to the newspaper, he is set to appear Friday in Akron Municipal Court on a first-degree misdemeanor charge.
“We take animal cruelty cases like this very seriously,” Akron Police Capt. Daniel Zampelli said.
