McDonald’s and Taco Bell are in a breakfast war.
McDonald’s sales haven’t been the greatest and now facing new competition in the breakfast arena, that makes up 20 percent of the company’s business, from competitors like Taco Bell and Starbucks.
The chain blamed bad winter weather but also said that “challenging industry dynamics” played a role in their sales slump. The company has started to adapt by making menu changes such as giving an option for egg whites in breakfast sandwiches and adding chicken McWraps to help appeal to those looking for fresher, healthier food.
With all those efforts, McDonald’s has decided to give breakfast customers at its participating locations a free 12-ounce small coffee. And it will be up to each McDonald’s location to decide if customers get just one cup or refills on the free coffee.
The free coffee is “McDonald’s way of encouraging new guests to try McCafe Coffee while giving our breakfast lovers even more reason to enjoy the great taste of our signature blend,” Greg Watson, a senior VP at McDonald’s U.S, said in a statement Friday.
McDonald’s also added the free coffee is its way of “surprising customers in unexpected ways all year long.”
The company said that starting in mid-April, it will surprise a Twitter follower every day for the year with McCafe coffee and prizes.
Taco Bell rolled out their highly-anticipated first-ever breakfast menu which has been dubbed as the “largest menu expansion in Taco Bell’s 50-year history.”
Taco Bell said about their new menu: “We just launched the next generation of breakfast – it’s not a two-week promotion. Clearly, our competition is taking notice and reacting.”
Taco Bell’s breakfast menu includes the Waffle Taco, a warm waffle wrapped around a sausage patty or bacon, with scrambled eggs and cheese and served with sweet syrup and the A.M. Crunchwrap. The Crunchwrap is a tortilla wrap filled with scrambled eggs, hash browns, melted cheese and bacon or sausage.
McDonald’s to Offer Free Coffee
McDonald’s said it will offer customers a free small cup of coffee for two weeks starting Monday.
