A small engine plane carrying local government employees crashed in Hawaii about a mile from Lanai Airport, officials said on Thursday, killing three people and injuring three others.
According to emergency dispatchers, the plane crashed just before 9:23 p.m. one mile southwest of the Lanai airport, known locally as the Miki Basin. Officials indicated early Thursday morning that one of the survivors of the plane crash called 911 and first notified emergency responders about the accident.
Officials believe that the plane crashed into an area of brush and caught fire, but its remote location made rescue efforts difficult. Officials said the plane was only visible to responders due to the fire’s glow.
Maui County identified the dead as the pilot of the plane and two Department of Planning employees. Two other planning employees were in critical condition and the deputy attorney for Corporation Counsel was in serious condition Thursday morning.
The three survivors of the Hawaii plane crash were airlifted to the Queen’s Medical Center on Oahu for emergency medical attention.
“They’ve sustained some broken bones and burns,” Rod Antone, Maui County’s Communications Director told Hawaii News Now. “All three of them are being treated for burns, I believe on their hands and face.”
None of those on the plane have been named. “Maui County is in mourning after we lost two of our own last night in a plane crash. Our condolences also go out to the family of the pilot who also died in the crash. Ann and I both wish the surviving county workers a speedy recovery,” Maui Mayor Alan Arakawa said in a statement.
The group had been on Lanai for a Lanai Planning Commission meeting and chartered a return flight on Maui Air, Honolulu station KITV reported.
The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation and Safety Board were both notified of the crash, officials say. Maui police investigators will be at the scene of the crash on Thursday to try and determine what may have caused the plane to go down.
