The earthquake happened around 8:47 p.m. on Thursday night, and its epicenter was 27 miles southwest of Susanville and seven miles west northwest of Greenville, about 150 miles northeast of Sacramento, and zero feet deep, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.
The California earthquake was felt in Reno, Nevada, and as far north as San Francisco, and as far south as Sacramento.
At least 22 aftershocks ranging from 2.6-to-3.5-magnitude followed the earthquake, including a magnitude 3.5 temblor at 8:55 p.m.
A smaller, 2.6-magnitude quake hit around a mile south of the first earthquake’s location at around 9:04 p.m.
Thursday’s earthquake was described as a long, rolling earthquake that lasted several seconds.
Several aftershocks were felt even into today, including a magnitude 4.9 that struck early Friday morning.
Some homes received minor structural damage, and there is a “boil water” order in the Lake Almanor area, which is adjacent to Greenville, California.
Slight damage was reported, which include objects falling from shelves and dishes rattled or broken, according to a report from the National Weather Service, but no reports of injury or serious damage.
Denise Yergenson, a spokeswoman for California Department of Transportation, said the agency had received no reports of rockslides or damage to state buildings. However, they were checking Highway 89 between Chester and Canyondam.
Workers also were checking structures and bridges.
