Korean heartthrob Cha Eun-woo serenaded his fans from the Philippines with his rendition of a popular song from the country, which impressed and surprised Filipinos.
Lee Dong-min, also known as Cha Eun-woo, is a South Korean singer, actor, and model under the label of Fantagio. He is a member of the South Korean boy group called Astro, which debuted on February 23, 2016, with the mini-album Spring Up.
He is also popular in the Philippines for his role in the hit Korean Drama, Gangnam Beauty, which aired in one of the country’s main TV networks, ABS-CBN, from August to October.
The K-pop star visited the Philippines October 26 for his Just One 10 Minute Fan Meet to all his Filipino fans. The concert was held at the New Frontier Theatre.
In a video upon his arrival, Cha said he was looking forward to meeting his fans. “It’s my first time so I look forward to meeting you guys,” he said in the clip posted by local promoter Wilbros Live.
But as a surprise, Cha prepared a Tagalog (the country’s mainly used language) song for him to sing to his fans. Cha sang Ben&Ben’s “Kathang Isip” during his fan meet.
Particularly, “Kathang Isip” or imagination in English is popular song from Ben&Ben, a band consisting of brothers, Paolo and Miguel Guico on acoustic guitars and vocals, Poch Barretto on electric guitar, Jam Villanueva on drums, Agnes Reoma on bass, Patricia Lasaten on keyboards, Toni Muñoz and Andrew de Pano on percussions, and Keifer Cabugao on violin.
In a short clip posted on Twitter by handle Saranghaeyo Oppa, it quickly went viral to all of Cha’s fans. At the time of writing the video has nearly a million views or 966,000 views with over a hundred thousand likes and over 35,000 retweets.
In the short 2-minute and 20-second video, Cha is seen simply singing “Kathang Isip” behind an elegant bokeh display. More significantly, he sang every word in Tagalog, which came as a surprise to his Filipino fans.
The account that posted the video captioned it by saying: “Cha Eun Woo singing Ben&Ben’s ‘Kathang Isip’ is the only thing that we need.”
Fans were also quick to express their gratitude for the singer and actor for learning a Tagalog song to impress his fans. Some even said they had a deeper admiration for Cha Eun-woo.
Even non-K-pop fans said they were impressed with the performance. A Twitter user wrote: “I am not a kpop fan but this is an exceptionally talented one. I guess internationally.”
Needless to say, Cha is a talented singer with a diverse set of skills. During his Bangkok, Thailand fan meet on October 23, Eun Woo sat down in front of the piano to play Justin Bieber’s song “Love Yourself!”
Also during the same Bangkok fan meet, dressed in traditional Korean hanbok, Cha sang “Remember Me!” It’s the theme song of Rookie Historian, where Eun Woo plays a prince who writes romance novels. He also sang “Rainbow Falling” from My ID Is Gangnam Beauty.
