A baby boy was born with an extra leg, two penises, and no anus. Fortunately, after several procedures done by doctors, the baby will now live a healthy life.
The male baby was born in Moscow, Russia. Her mother refused to receive an abortion, instead proceeded to give natural birth.
According to reports, the third leg was first spotted by medics during a routine scan on the mother, who lives in a provincial Russian region, during pregnancy.
Medics in Moscow said that the third leg, with two heels, came from a twin that did not fully develop in the mother’s womb. The additional limb was located between the two legs, and the child was also born with two sets of genitals and double urinary systems, but no anus.
A spokesperson for the Moscow health department said: “Most likely, in the beginning, these were twins. The middle leg had two heels. These had to be two boys, but [in the womb] it turned into just one baby.”
Without the consent of the mother for a child termination, doctors at the Holy Vladimir Children’s hospital in Moscow had no other choice but to work around the defects that were presented after birth.
The child was born in July 2018 and, immediately, doctors attended to address the issues regarding the baby’s lack of an anus to allow him to defecate safely before proceeding with the other surgeries to correct his ailments.
The procedure was performed by one of Russia’s top pediatric surgeons Professor Yury Sokolov, 55, accompanied by Dr. Evgenia Kartsev from Holy Vladimir Children’s hospital in Moscow.
Just a month after the anus corrective procedure, the middle leg was surgically removed.
Earlier this year, in February, urologists in Russia performed another surgery to remove the child’s additional genitals and the second set of urinary organs. A further operation was then carried out to position the child’s anus in the correct location.
Following the surgeries, the boy is now walking and can look forward to a normal life, according to the doctors who performed the operation.
One further operation is needed in three months to allow the implanted anus to function and the baby to use normally, say the medics. But overall, due to the amazing work the doctors did, the baby will grow normally.
“The boy is 14 months old now. He is walking and looking around at the world. He is curious,” a Moscow health department source said.
