The 1995 coming-of-age film Now & Then will be giving the nostalgic feel to Netflix as the streaming service announced that it will be available for streaming this August.
“Grab your bikes and find your best friends because ‘Now and Then’ will be available to stream on Netflix US starting August 1,” Netflix tweeted, along with a photo of the full cast from the ’90s hit.
In the film, four childhood friends reunite and reflect on their adventures, including the memories of the unforgettable summer of 1970.
The younger versions of the group are played by Gaby Hoffmann (Samantha), Christina Ricci (Roberta), Ashleigh Ashton Moore (Chrissy), and Thora Birch (Teeny) — with the women they grew up to be — played by Demi Moore, Rosie O’Donnell, Rita Wilson, and Melanie Griffith, respectively.
Lesli Linka Glatter directed and I. Marlene King wrote the screenplay for the film. Later on, King went on to develop the fan-crazed suspense series Pretty Little Liars.
Although the film received mostly negative reviews upon its release, it proved to be a moderate financial success and gained a cult following over time because of its representation on women friendships. The film grossed over $37.5 million with just a $12 million budget.
Now and Then also came with a memorable soundtrack, which included hits like “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me” by Diana Ross and The Supremes with The Temptations, and “I’ll Be There” by The Jackson 5.
In 2012, a television series was in development that was supposed to be adapted from Now and Then but was later on scrapped. King was supposedly the writer for the series, too.
Back in 2015, King spoke at the 20th anniversary of the film saying: “It was on ABC Family but they wanted to change it so the ‘now’ was present day and the ‘then’ would be the ‘90s,” King said. “I didn’t want to do that — I felt that kind of ruins how special the movie is.… To me, there will never be a 1970s again, so to try to set it in the ‘90s when we had cell phones and things like that, I don’t think it would work.”
She also said she loves when fans approach her about the film, to this day.
“Mothers are now sending me notes saying they’re showing it to their daughters,” she said. “I feel like it’s become this timeless movie, and unfortunately more movies like this aren’t out there, so people I think have latched on to Now and Then as an example of what we were just talking about: positive girl friendships. And I think it’s become this iconic movie, and that’s awesome!”
