Bandai Namco updates its YouTube channel with the prologue trailer for its brand new Digimon game, Digimon Survive. Yes, that is technically a prologue trailer, as it focuses solely on the story of the game.
The video opens with what is probably a typical morning at a Japanese co-ed school. The protagonist Takuma characterized most obviously by his signature goggles, notices a few odd things in the campus, while news reports of what is shown as an earthquake incident within the Shikano area plays along in the background TV.
A separate scene then shows a man surrounded by creatures in a forest, which we can presume as either Digimon themselves, or a brand new entity that will be introduced in the game.
The setting on a what is presumably a high-school, the serious tone of the entire prologue trailer, as well as the mature visuals reminiscent of main-title Digimon games as of late, somewhat gives a very strong vibe of a Persona or a Shin Megami Tensei game. It doesn’t help that no Digimon are visibly seen at all during the entire time, at least not in detail, that would give away the designation of this game’s franchise.
If it wasn’t introduced as a Digimon game from the get-go, people might mistake it as a work in progress by Atlus. Especially if we are not going to specify the animation studio or the gaming company that released the trailer.
In any case, Digimon Survive, as revealed a year ago, seems to be consistently moving ahead on the mature feel and design that the franchise already took several years ago, starting with Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth. As to how deep the game’s primary incident will go this time, we’ll just have to see and wait.
Digimon Survive is slated to be released for the PS4 and Nintendo Switch sometime in 2020.
