After the Pokémon Go‘s massive success of urging players to walk more and to “catch them all,” the Pokémon company, this time, wants all Pokémon Trainers to sleep more.
Last May 29, the company announced that they would release Pokémon Sleep and Pokémon Go Plus Plus that will turn sleep into a form of entertainment. When combined, the two inventions will form a tracking system that will give rewards to players that usually achieve good nights’ sleep.
Pokémon Sleep is a sleep tracking game. However, specific details about it are yet to come. But, what we know so far is that the Pokémon Sleep incentivize players based on the duration of sleep every player achieve. This kind of gameplay aims to combat kids and young adults’ practice of compromising sleep. Pokémon Sleep will be available in 2020.
On the other hand, Pokémon Go Plus Plus is a sleep tracking device from Nintendo. Note: There’s no typo in its title.
Pokémon Go Plus Plus includes the same functionalities as its older brother, Pokémon Go Plus. It needs to be used together with Pokémon Sleep app to catch new Pokémon. When the Go Plus Plus is linked to an iPhone or Android phone, players can catch Pokémon with just a click of a button.
Unlike its predecessor, the Pokémon Go Plus Plus includes an accelerometer that tracks time spent on sleeping and sends the data to the user’s phone via Bluetooth. Players can use it with Pokemon Go during the day and can use it with Pokémon Sleep at night. It physically looks like a disc-shaped Pokéball and lets users catch Pokémon without taking their phone out of their pockets.
In Pokémon Go, players can install the app on their phones and get out of the house. But for Pokémon Sleep, trainers are required to purchase the Pokémon Go Plus Plus accessory.
During the Pokémon 2019 press conference, the Pokémon Company’s CEO Tsunekazo Ishihara announced that after walking, they decided to focus on the act of sleeping because every human being spends a lot of time sleeping.
Why is Pokémon Go popular? Unlike most games, where players spend most of their time sitting inside their homes, Pokémon Go encourages trainers to get out of their homes and walk outside.
Pokémon Go is one of the most successful games of all time — the fastest game to earn $100 million. Based on SuperDataResearch, a data analysis firm, Pokémon Go received revenue of more than 890 million dollars in 2017, and it was the 9th biggest game of that year.
The Pokémon company was founded in Tokyo in 1988, with a joint investment from Nintendo, Game Freak, and Creatures.
Sleeping is an essential part of our lives. When people sleep less than 6 hours each night, they are at a higher risk of developing diseases like heart disease and stroke. A right amount of sleep is vital for our physical and mental health. According to one of the sleep experts at National Institutes of Health, Dr. Michael Twery sleep is not only crucial for the brain, but it also affects our growth and stress hormones, immune system, appetite, breathing, blood pressure, and cardiovascular health. It can improve concentration and productivity, and it also helps the body heal itself.
The company’s strategy is a combination of gaming and health — where gamers can relax, and at the same time, unknowingly take care of their physical health.
