Aladdin’s ’A Whole New World’ Gets A Revamp

Published

on

What we think about aladdin's new version of A Whole New World and how its new singers made a positive impact both for the song and the movie by giving it a modern touch

A new version of Aladdin’s 1992 ’A Whole New World’ OST just dropped on YouTube and for the most part, we’re happy about it!

Disney uploaded the music video Thursday featuring a duet between pop powerhouse, Zayn Malik and rising music star Zhavia Ward.

The Alan Menken-penned famous ballad comes one of many songs that would be available with the rest of the upcoming Aladdin remake’s album.

If you’ve watched Aladdin’s live-action trailer a few months back, you would also notice that another famous song from the original, A Friend Like Me also got a modern twist. Mainly, like the rest of the Twitterverse, we were surprised when Genie started to rap!

Apparently, A Friend Like Me wasn’t the only song that Disney decided to give a modern twist. In the newer version of A Whole New World, there are some things that Disney also decided to play with.

In the 1992 version, the dreamy melody was sung by voice actors Brad Kane and Lea Salonga for the original animated version of Aladdin, which peaked at No. 1 in the United States before bagging the Oscar for Best Original Song. Furthermore, the hit classic became the movie’s famous love song that was imprinted on all of its fans’ mind with Jasmine and Aladdin singing on top of a flying carpet, all the while admiring the view. Now that’s certainly a feat any other artist would both be terrified and honored to follow.

”The selection of artists, producer, and tonal direction was critical for the success of updating a classic song like this,” president of Walt Disney Studio’s Music & Soundtracks Mitchell Leib said in a statement. “Zayn’s vocals are like no other and his artistic imprint immediately brought a contemporary and diverse presence.”

Zayn Malik, the former One Direction singer, was personally chosen to sing the male voice in the modern version of A Whole New World. His vocal range easily matches the contemporary vibe of the classic all the while giving it a dynamic that would resemble with today’s pop culture.

Meanwhile, Zhavia Ward was chosen by Zayn to perform the duet with. Zhavia is an up and coming music star who grew her popularity on the famous talent show, ‘The Four’ where judges were famous singers and producers like Dj Khaled.

Zhavia’s presence in The Four was quickly embraced both by the judges and the audience because of her unique vocals. She gives her songs a more reggae-RnB feel that takes you on a drifting journey all the while having the kind of energy that remains upbeat.

We can see hints of Zhavia’s singing style in the newer version of A Whole New World that beautifully compliments Malik’s vocal range where overall revamp the ballad but not wholly that it offsets the purpose and the nostalgia the song comes with. And to complement the whole musical score, there are more lively beats and a few Arabian melodies that Disney added, which is quite tasteful even though they’re veering away from the whole dreamy and romantic vibe of the original.

In terms of the aesthetic feel in the music video, sadly there are no magic carpet rides, but we get to see the beautiful Manhattan night and Central Park’s Bethesda Terrace with Zhavia singing ”unbelievable sights, indescribable feelings…” to the night sky. It’s no classic fairytale, but it’s something we get to appreciate as a modern ballad in a place filled with city lights, which overall compliments the whole idea of updating the classic love song.

There may have been mixed reviews regarding Guy Ritchie’s live adaptation of Aladdin, starting with the black genie where it’s not because he’s black but the genie we all know and love is blue. Now, at least they nailed the famous song that sent lovers cooing each other right.

The duet will be featured in the film’s soundtrack as well as the end credits. We’ll also get to hear more from Aladdin’s soundtrack including “Friend Like Me” performed by Will Smith, who plays Genie, and DJ Khaled. You can preorder the soundtrack here.

Aladdin–starring Will Smith as Genie, Naomi Scott as Jasmine, and Mena Massoud as Aladdin–opens May 24 in theaters.A

‘John Wick 3’: Parabellum Has The Best Fight Scenes

John Wick 3: Parabellum has the best fight scenes in the entire action movie industry by going for better rather than just bigger. Click To Tweet

The unstoppable avenging hitman is back in cinemas for its third installment, and we can’t disregard to talk about it. Nonetheless, John Wick 3: Parabellum is finally here; expect mild spoilers ahead.

For those who’ve been living under a rock and has decided to come out to watch John Wick 3: Parabellum, John Wick (Keanu Reeves) is a legendary hitman with cool nicknames like the Boogeyman or “Baba Yaga.” He lives in a world like our own but with more assassins in every corner than rats living in your attic, and complete with a whole set of underground government ruled by the High Table.

In the first movie, he retired his guns and knives because he fell in love. Unfortunately, his wife passed away early, but she left him a dog named, Daisy. On a very unnecessary day, Iosef Tarassov–a Russian Gangster–got mad when Wick refused to sell his car and knocks Wick out and killed Daisy on his way out. Infuriated, Wick sets out on a path of vengeance that ultimately sets off the entire series.

On his path to vengeance, he triggers old boss Viggo Tarassov when he can’t talk Wick out of his senseless parade of violence on his son, Iosef. As a result, he places a $2 million bounty on his head. In the end, he kills both Viggo and Iosef simply because nothing will stop John Wick from seeking revenge. The movie ends with him leaving with a freed pitbull set for euthanization, cute.

Moving over to the second movie, John Wick is forced to get out of retirement, again! Remember when he needed to accomplish an impossible task before retiring? He required the aid of Italian crime lord, Santino D’Antonio (Riccardo Scamarcio). Santino, in return, gave him a coin, which they call the “marker” which basically signifies a favor waiting to be returned. Santino asks Wick to kill his sister, Gianna, before she ascends to sit o the High Table, which he wants for himself.

The “marker,” which is one of the two unbreakable cardinal rules in Wick’s world, forces him to pay the favor back and kills Gianna. However, Santino decides to double cross Wick and tries to kill him to cover his tracks as he ascends to the High Table.

Wick escapes, Santino places a $7 million bounty on his head, but ultimately he kills Santino, newly named at the High Table. We are talking about John Wick, he’s practically un-killable. These assassins should have known better.

One problem, though. Wick killed Santino in the middle of a Continental Hotel–a supposed sanctuary for the world’s hitmen where they’re safe and can’t be killed and also the other unbreakable cardinal rule.

John Wick 3: Parabellum picks up moments before Wick becomes “excommunicato” for killing a person from the High Table at the Continental Hotel. The hotel’s manager, Winston (Ian McShane), gives him an hour head-start.

We’ll see Wick scramble to find allies and guns, a lot of it, as his status isn’t only just within New York City but is extended to the whole world with a $14 million bounty. Everyone from the underground world of hitmen and assassins will be wanting a piece of that, and there’ no sanctuary for him to run to this time.

The title refers to the old adage, Si vis pacem, para Bellum: “If you want peace, prepare for war.” Wick has essentially declared war on the High Table, and the escalation plays out exactly as you’d expect when everyone’s favorite dog-loving hitman is involved.

Favorite takeaways from the movie are Wick killing a 6-foot tall assassin in between tight library hallways using a book, almost all of the well-choreographed fight scenes, and Sophia (Halle Berry) having a swath of vicious dogs attack in her behalf.

In conclusion, without giving too much away, John Wick 3: Parabellum knows how to keep the ball rolling within its storyline without sacrificing the brusque-noir vibe that made the film great. Moreover, the fight scene is only getting better with one of the best executions compared to other movies where they tend to go bigger rather than better.

On other news, we’re pulling the trigger on this one, John Wick 3 also hinted a coming John Wick 4. About the when we’re not sure as the John Wick series usually takes years in between each other. Nonetheless, we’re too excited about it.

It: Chapter 2 Trailer Is Giving Us A Creepy Glimpse

Published

on

Never start a morning by watching a scary movie trailer, ever. Best believe that I waited a few more hours into the day before I watched the latest trailer for It: Chapter 2 on YouTube.

Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema released the first trailer into their creepy roller coaster ride with the loser club and Mr. Pennywise Thursday, and I’m thinking it’s kind of a joke about waking you up for the day but probably not.

The trailer is 2 minutes and fifty-six seconds long, but a whole bunch of it is most likely a scene in the movie where Beverly, played by Jessica Chastain, returns to her old home in Derry, Maine and sees the seemingly adorable Mrs. Kersh, and so it seems.

The entire 2 minutes and a half of the trailer consists the conversation between Mrs. Kersh and Bev while she reminisces her utterly twisted childhood through ragged old photos, not something I would like looking back on for sure. Meanwhile, Mrs. Kersh transforms into this senile old woman every time she goes back to an extremely dim kitchen. Seriously, who bakes cookies in a dark kitchen? A definite sign to just run away, if I were her.

Probably one of the creepiest parts in the trailer is when Mrs. Kersh said that ”You know what they say about Derry? No one who dies here ever really does, ” and then seeing a chest wound seconds later as she fans out her blouse.

The trailer ends with abrupt scenes with the old loser club getting together intertwined with cuts with floating red balloons, the clown makes up tearing off, and a sewing machine running in the background, of course.

The story picks up from the successful prequel, It, but this time we’re jumping 27 years later where all our loser club kids have all grown up. But with age comes new terrors as the demonic clown Pennywise (Bill Skarsgard) plots his revenge against Bill (James McAvoy), Beverly (Jessica Chastain), Richie (Bill Hader), Ben (Jay Ryan), Eddie (James Ransone), Mike (Isaiah Mustafa), and Stanley (Andy Bean). The evil clown of sorts ain’t too happy about getting beaten the last time all of them were together in a single place.

In terms of how the movie we’ll go, one cannot tell for sure. Even if you’re an avid Stephen King novel fan, his films usually get altered for the blockbuster version. But we guess that the old loser club is back in their old home town and is teaming up again to finally rid Derry of Pennywise’s terror but as they’re back, the mischievous and creepy clown’s out for vengeance, but this time he’s pulling all the stops.

Another interesting point of view is from a tidbit of easter eggs from the trailer; as Bev looks at a photo on the wall, Mrs. Kersh tells her that her father once used to work at a circus. Her father is Mr. Bob Gray or Pennywise. In the photo, we see a pre-clown Pennywise, and we’re betting that Chapter 2 might be the closest thing we’ll ever get to have of an origin story from the infamously creepy clown.

Meanwhile, the person who brought Stephen King’s It the success in the box office and critically acclaimed horror director, Andy Muschietti promises that the sequel would be “scarier and more intense” than the first film. That’s a significant promise since It as of today is the highest grossing horror film of all time garnering $700 million. It’s no wonder why they’re treating the whole ordeal as a spectacular like it’s Avengers: Endgame.

In addition to that, even Stephen King himself says the movie’s going to be okay since he had seen it. Have you ever heard Stephen King liked a Stephen King movie before? (Except for The Shining, of course.) You can always trust a movie with Jessica Chastain and James McAvoy to be good  (personal opinion).

Overall, that was just the first trailer, and we’re bound to know more as the months leading up to the movie nears. For sure, we’ll get more details into this twisted clown story!

It: Chapter 2 is released in cinemas September 6!
