Netflix’s Our Planet Is Something You Haven’t Seen Before

Published

on

Netflix is releasing its ambitious 8-part nature documentary series that will take its viewers across the globe; through harsh terrains and places you can’t begin to imagine and introduce you to creatures never before captured by a camera. This is Our Planet, a docuseries that promises to awaken the consciousness of its viewers to the sheer beauty of nature and the destruction our actions have caused upon it.

It hails from the direction of Keith Scholey and Alastair Fothergill, who also worked with BBC’s Planet Earth, which might soon lose its title to Netflix for being the best nature documentary film.

Sir David Attenborough, his renowned voice that grew synonymous with nature documentaries, will also be gracing Netflix’s docuseries. Because would you call it a nature documentary without his voice in the background?

Nature documentaries, in essence, provides a lens into the rest of the world; outside city streets, further than your town’s outskirts and extends to the very realm of the animal kingdom. They give us a view of how the animal ecosystem interacts with each other from the convenience of our televisions.

For decades, this was the way these type of documentaries were made – with its basic tenets to never disrupt the ecosystem and function. Humans are merely there to give us a glimpse.

However, it grew that all we see are the beauty what nature has to offer, the complexities of the animal kingdom, or the interaction of both that comprises their ecosystem. We don’t get to see the destruction that our actions cause.

In BBC‘s Planet Earth series, we see that narrative changed but not so much. In every 45-minute episode, we get to hear 5 minutes of what our actions have resulted in the animal kingdom’s ecosystem. That’s where Netflix’s Our Planet differentiates itself from all the different nature documentaries out there.

Netflix’s Our Planet would function as a wake-up call to human society. It’s a slap in the wrist that our action takes an enormous toll on the lives of millions of organisms outside our own.

“Netflix [decided], ‘This is what we want to put forward,'” Scholey says. “I think this could become the biggest conservation push, in terms of public awareness, there’s ever been, and to have them enabling us to get there is incredibly exciting.”

“We wanted to make it clear that, over the past 50 years, so much of nature has vanished, and time is short in terms of making sure that we keep the natural world for our children and our children’s children,” he adds.

A case in point: Even as they were in the process of filming, a portion of the Great Barrier Reef died due to temperature change. “It’s probably the greatest natural disaster that’s happened in the history of humanity,” Scholey states.

Moreover, Our Planet was a product of five years of intensive labor and research that spanned to 50 countries and every continent with 600 crew members required to be in-location of some of the most gruesome environments.

And within those five years, they saw drastic changes in the environment that would shock the regular person with how fast they come.

Forests have been destroyed. After seeing orangutans Louie, Eden, and Pluto, in their natural habitat, Our Planet tells us that 100 of these apes die every week through human activity and that they may be the last of their generation. We see Borneo’s jungle transforming into oil-palm monocultures in a time-lapse shot that is almost painful to watch.

Even Attenborough’s manner of speaking changes in this docuseries. He takes on a more sympathetic and cold approach, unlike the usual excitement and wonder. It’s an appeal for action against our very own destructive force.

If you think about it, it’s almost too dark and depressing. A part of Our Planet truly is, and that’s the main point of it. Viewers are forced to acknowledge that every one of us has contributed to the chaos that’s accumulated around us. We’re too busy building ourselves and the environment around us, but we turn a blind eye towards what’s happening to the rest of the world.

It may be sad and hopeless, but the docuseries is also a telling story of hope and determination. That our actions may have caused irreparable damages, but we may still build from the ashes as seen in Chernobyl where life is slowly being restored.

We will still get to see the beauty that remains through concrete actions and changes in society to address the issues that our world is facing. The first step is that we need to realize what we’ve done then we can start about thinking about what we should do to prevent it from happening again.

Our Planet starts streaming on Netflix April 5.

‘Now & Then’ Coming To Netflix; Here’s Netflix August Movie And TV Show Lineup

The nostalgic movie about female bond and friendships is coming to Netflix this August.

The 1995 coming-of-age film Now & Then will be giving the nostalgic feel to Netflix as the streaming service announced that it will be available for streaming this August.

“Grab your bikes and find your best friends because ‘Now and Then’ will be available to stream on Netflix US starting August 1,” Netflix tweeted, along with a photo of the full cast from the ’90s hit.

In the film, four childhood friends reunite and reflect on their adventures, including the memories of the unforgettable summer of 1970.

The younger versions of the group are played by Gaby Hoffmann (Samantha), Christina Ricci (Roberta), Ashleigh Ashton Moore (Chrissy), and Thora Birch (Teeny) — with the women they grew up to be — played by Demi Moore, Rosie O’Donnell, Rita Wilson, and Melanie Griffith, respectively.

Lesli Linka Glatter directed and I. Marlene King wrote the screenplay for the film. Later on, King went on to develop the fan-crazed suspense series Pretty Little Liars.

Although the film received mostly negative reviews upon its release, it proved to be a moderate financial success and gained a cult following over time because of its representation on women friendships. The film grossed over $37.5 million with just a $12 million budget.

Now and Then also came with a memorable soundtrack, which included hits like “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me” by Diana Ross and The Supremes with The Temptations, and “I’ll Be There” by The Jackson 5.

In 2012, a television series was in development that was supposed to be adapted from Now and Then but was later on scrapped. King was supposedly the writer for the series, too.

Back in 2015, King spoke at the 20th anniversary of the film saying: “It was on ABC Family but they wanted to change it so the ‘now’ was present day and the ‘then’ would be the ‘90s,” King said. “I didn’t want to do that — I felt that kind of ruins how special the movie is.… To me, there will never be a 1970s again, so to try to set it in the ‘90s when we had cell phones and things like that, I don’t think it would work.”

She also said she loves when fans approach her about the film, to this day.

“Mothers are now sending me notes saying they’re showing it to their daughters,” she said. “I feel like it’s become this timeless movie, and unfortunately more movies like this aren’t out there, so people I think have latched on to Now and Then as an example of what we were just talking about: positive girl friendships. And I think it’s become this iconic movie, and that’s awesome!”

MCU Commits To Diversity; Valkyrie Gets A Bisexual Storyline

Fans are all for it!

Marvel has confirmed that Valkyrie is the first LGBTQ+ character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige confirms that the Asgardian warrior will have an LGBTQ+ storyline in the new movie, Thor: Love and Thunder. The Marvel films producer also hinted that this LGBTQ+ representation would not be limited to the new Thor film alone.

Feige said, “How that impacts the story remains to be seen with that level of representation you’ll see across our films, not in just Thor 4.”

Valkyrie, who is played by Tessa Thompson, is confirmed to be bisexual based on reports. What’s great is that Thompson is a real-life LGBTQ+ icon herself. Thompson’s non-hetero-normative portrayal of Valkyrie earned praises when she first appeared in Thor: Ragnarok.

During the San Diego Comic Convention, Thompson teased about Valkyrie’s LGBTQ+ storyline. When asked what Valkryie will do as the king of the new Asgard, Thompson responded that she would search for her queen.

“As the new king, she needs to find her queen,” Thompson happily announces to a cheering crowd. “That will be her first order of business. She has some ideas. Keep you posted.”

Valkyrie has always been Bisexual

The decision to make Valkyrie an LGBTQ+ character may seem like a sudden change of pace for Marvel. However, anyone familiar with the Fearless Defenders comic book series affirms that she has always been a bisexual character.

In the series, Valkyrie has an exciting relationship with Dr. Annabelle Riggs, an archaeologist who acquired an Asgardian statuette. Valkyrie met Dr. Riggs after she accidentally triggered a melody using the statuette on a Viking mass grave. In the very first issue of the comic, Valkyrie and Dr. Riggs share a passionate kiss.

Though only confirmed for Thor: Love and Thunder, Valkyrie’s bisexuality were addressed earlier in Thor: Ragnarok. A scene was supposed to show her bisexuality through a glimpse of a woman leaving the Valkyrie’s room. However, the filmed clip was ultimately cut because it distracts the audience to an essential point of the story.

Despite the scene being deleted, Thompson did her best to portray Valkyrie’s sexuality. In the scenes of flashback, Valkyrie is shown training and fighting alongside her Valkyrie sisters. When the Hela, the Goddess of Death and Thor’s exiled sister, murdered the rest of the warrior clan, Valkyrie’s agony goes beyond her despair for her fallen sisters.

Thompson shares that she channeled the loss of a loved one in the scene to subtlety hint Valkyrie’s bisexuality. “There’s a great shot of me falling back from one of my sisters who’s just been slain,” Thompson shares in an interview. “In my mind, that was my lover.”

In Twitter, Thompson also talked about Valkyrie’s bisexuality right after the release of Thor: Ragnarok. Thompson answered fans’ questions about the film and her character.

Marvel and LGBTQ+ representation issue

Although Valkyrie is the first LGBTQ+ character in Marvel Studios’ MCU, Marvel Comics have long included LGBTQ+ characters in their storyline.

Appearing in 1979’s X-Men Comics, Northstar a member of a fictional Canadian superhero team called Alpha Flight. Northstar is a mutant with the ability to fly and create photonic energy blasts. He is the first openly gay character in the Marvel Universe. He’s also the first married gay man, marrying his longtime boyfriend, Kyle Jinadu in 2012.

Drax’s daughter, Moondragon, is also an openly-bisexual character in the Guardians of the Galaxy comic series. Also known as Heather Douglas, Moondragon is a telepath, telekinetic, and martial arts practitioner.

Speculation of Marvel introducing these characters soon has gained praise from fans and the LGBTQ+ community.

In the past, Marvel has not addressed the issue of representation well. Similar to the decision on Thor: Ragnarok‘s deleted scene, some of the known LGBTQ+ characters in Black Panther were not explicitly stated.

Two of Dora Milaje are lovers, but they did not get any speaking lines. Fans criticized Marvel for not taking the opportunity for LGBTQ+ representation.

In Avengers: Endgame, a Grieving Man in a support group, talked about losing his gay partner. Critics did not like this scene because it was a haphazardly thrown in to please those who’ve been clamoring for representation.

Marvel’s Phase 4 has given hopes to a more diverse representation starting with Valkyrie’s LGBTQ+ storyline. Marvel plans to introduce more superheroes with a slate of films and TV series until 2021. Fans hope that Northstar and Moondragon will be added to the MCU soon.

LOOK: A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood Trailer

Based on Tom Junod’s work in 1998, the movie will tell how the kindest man in television told children to always be kind

Published

Sony Pictures Entertainment dropped the first official trailer of A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood. Tom Hanks is playing Steve Rogers, the friendly TV personality that reminded everyone to be good.

Mirrored with the original “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood,” the trailer starts with Mr. Rogers singing the classic theme song. This time, it’s Hanks who is doing the singing and asking the audience, “Won’t you be my neighbor?”

Just like the host himself, Hanks — with gray hair and a nicely-pressed suit — changes into a red cardigan and some sneakers. He even does the iconic shoe toss.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is not a biopic about Rogers’ life but is instead, inspired by the real-life friendship between Fred Rogers (Hanks) and Tom Junod (Matthew Rhys), a cynical journalist assigned to write a profile of the long-running television host in 1998.

Based on the trailer, we see that Junod is given a new name, Lloyd Vogel who arrives on the iconic set of PBS’s Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, where he plans to interview Fred Rogers for Esquire’s “heroes” issue.

“This piece will be for an issue about heroes,” Rhys’ character tells Rogers in the new clip. “Do you consider yourself a hero?”

He responds, “We are trying to give the world positive ways of dealing with their feelings.”

“There are many things you can do,” Rogers offers up. “You can play all the lowest keys on the piano at the same time.”

Vogel is a fictional character based on Tom Junod’s original work. Like in real life, he documents about the effect Rogers’ optimistic kindness had on millions of people. He initially accepts the job with a cynical approach as his wife (Susan Kelechi Watson) asks him not to “ruin her childhood,” in the trailer.

The skeptical journalist overtime shifts his perspective on life and eventually turns a new leaf as he begins to see the world with more positivity as he got to know Mister Rogers more.

Towards the end of the short 2-minute trailer, a group of subway riders sings “It’s a Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” to Rogers, who beams and says they did a wonderful job. A tasteful and heart-warming scene that represents how much Mister Rogers has touched people’s lives not only for children but in all ages.

The feel-good film will attempt to give the same effect that Mister Rogers once did. Known as the kindest man in television history, the original “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” aired for 31 seasons since 1968 and came to an end in 2001.

Unfortunately, Rogers died in 2003.

Marielle Heller (“Can You Ever Forgive Me?”) directs the film.  The screenplay, based on Junod’s Esquire article and written by Noah Harpster and Micah Fitzerman-Blue.

Also starring in the movie are Susan Kelechi Watson and Chris Cooper.

Last year, Won’t You Be My Neighbor—a documentary about Fred Rogers was the surprise hit of the summer, which received positive reviews from critics and viewers. Furthermore, it did good with box office, grossing more than $22 million in ticket sales.

Filmmaker Morgan Neville, who directed the 2018 documentary said: “I think what he was trying to do is teach us how to be human. This new medium was coming television. He recognized something from the moment he saw it, that many generations of children were going to be raised by this thing, and that somebody had to use that as a tool to help children.”

As part of the marketing for the film, a Facebook group for “Mister Rogers’ Helpers” is advertised at the end of the trailer, exhorting the audience to spread his “legacy of kindness.” The name of the group is a reference to a story Rogers cited a number of times: that his mother always told him, during times of trouble, to “look for the helpers.”

In other news, the film was supposedly slated for a much earlier release in October 2018, but the movie’s set was a site of a tragedy when the Emmy-winning sound mixer James Emswiller fell from a two-story building during filming and died.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood is now slated to release around Thanksgiving on November 2019.
