Angelina Jolie In Talks For New MCU Role

One month before the end of the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 3 with the Avengers: Endgame, Phase 4 is on its way with reports that Angelina Jolie will be playing a character in the lesser known property, The Eternals.

The Oscar-winning actress is said to play a character from the mind of Jack Kirby in The Eternals that will be directed by Chloe Zhao, the “supposed-to-be” director the origin story of Black Widow. The projects are also said to follow the script written by Matthew and Ryan Firpo.

Jolie has a fantastic movie reel that showcases her talent across different genres like Drama, Action, and Fantasy. She is said to take on the role after her stellar performance in Disney’s blockbuster, Maleficent.

Angelina Jolis is a seasoned Disney actress, and once the movie is confirmed, this will be her first role that’s based off a comic book and play as a superhero.

Jolie’s early casting announcement will be a fantastic start to announcing the character list for The Eternals franchise and garner attention from a different set of audiences.

The Maleficent star will undoubtedly affect how the rest of the franchise will pan out, as her resumé is self-telling. Getting to cast Jolie will be a success in itself and will surely jumpstart the entire franchise.

The Eternals

The franchise, which was based on Jack Kirby’s characters, had previously failed to enter mainstream media and was even initially canceled even before Kirby was able to finish the comic.

Eventually, writers like Roy Thomas and Mark Gruenwald resolved some of those loose ends in the pages of The Mighty Thor. That Thor-Eternals crossover paved the way for these characters to begin taking a more active role in the larger Marvel Universe.

The Eternals is said to follow the cosmic storyline about a race of nearly immortal human beings who are constantly battling a similar race called the Deviants. Both are creations of The Celestials after biological experimentations with humans.

Where most Eternals have chosen to follow the path of peace, the Deviants are hateful and warlike. The Eternals have human-like features unlike the spitfeul Deviants. They will battle each other across the universe, usually at the expense of human life.

Jolie is most likely to either play the characters of Eternals Sersi, Thena, or Elysius. Sersi is one of the lead roles in the comics and will also take part in a romance plot, and Ms. Jolie’s participation would be an ideal fit. However, the humanitarian has been keen on choosing parts lately as she also focuses on directing and producing her films. If ever, she can take the roles of either Thena or Elysius who will not require Jolie to stick around for longer durations with the MCU.

How the movie will pan out, however, is still quite unsure as the plot is very much under wraps and we are yet to see how the Director, Zhao, will take the movie into production.

While The Eternals didn’t receive as much attention as MCU’s other franchise, Thanos who is part of the franchise received plenty of exposure accumulated across the Avengers series and will appear again on Avengers: Endgame. All of which is a possible introduction to MCU’s Phase 4.

The Eternals is said to play a major role in MCU’s Phase 4.

MCU Phase 4

Phase 4 will start with Spiderman: Far From Home this July 2019. The Spiderman franchise is one of the more popular properties from MCU and will set the stage for the upcoming movies.

Also, Phase 4 is reportedly said to take the cosmic element of the comics, which Captain Marvel already started and will most likely lead the rest of the series in the upcoming years.

With the introduction of immortals and the cosmic universe, this will allow marvel to explore the fantasies revolving around the mysteries and history of the universe and the timeline may span into millions of years. It will be unlike the Avengers series and is touted to be more dynamic.

It is also reported, that this may lead to the introduction of the mutants into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Eternals is said to start filming this Fall and will come out on theaters in late 2020.
