Netflix explores a new kind of interactive series which sparks changes in the field of entertainment, catering to a much older audience. The streaming service company aims to provide quality shows not just for teens (which mostly is the target of most of its movies and TV series) but serves its purpose to its adult viewers as well.
The streaming giant has announced that a new live-action interactive adventure series, You vs. Wild featuring survival expert and TV personality Bear Grylls, a spin on his former Discovery Channel series Man vs. Wild.
‘You vs. Wild’ marks the second interactive live-action project from Netflix following Black Mirror: Bandersnatch, which dominated the internet last year. The company also explored other interactive shows with animated series like ‘Puss in Book: Trapped in an Epic Tale’ and a ‘Minecraft show’ with Telltale Games. However, these live-action poses significant endeavors; its a more expensive move and requires higher-profile projects for the company.
Mechanics of the Show
Netflix launched the eight-episode show in a press event in Los Angeles.
The show will allow audiences on a veritable choose-your-own-adventure across ‘dense jungles, towering mountains, brutal desserts, and mysterious forests waiting to be discovered.’
Viewers follow along with the adventures Grylls around the world and his conquests for great outdoors experience. As with the nature of the series, just like its predecessors, viewers will decide what Grylls eats, whether he walks or crawls across snowy terrain and witness whether he succeeds or fails. But failing, however, is not the main options for the audience. As the series progress, fun and more challenging adventures will come along Grylls way.
All eight episodes of the series will be released this coming April 10 on Netflix.
Twist and Turn of the show
The twist is that the viewers will be able to choose Grylls’ decisions in each episode and see how it is going to affect the show. But of course, viewers should choose a safe and wise move that does not involve Grylls failing to survive in the wilderness or let alone make choices that would kill him.
Netflix’s Vice President of Original Series Holland reminded viewers that You vs. Wild is not as dark as Netflix’s previous interactive project, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch. It is lighter and includes a lot of fun adventures compared to the latter.
Netflix aims to top the field of Interactive Media
The company is doubling down its effort on interactive storytelling as what the company’s Vice President, Todd Yellin, had mentioned last week on a press conference. Fortunately, You vs. Wild is one of its many ambitions that turns into reality, as it marks the beginning of the company’s interactive media aspirations.
Grylls’ Take on the Show
For Grylls, this is his second programme when it comes to streaming services. He had been featured on Bear Grylls: Face the Wild on Facebook Watch which also garnered a lot of support from his avid fans after his Man vs.Wild series. The show ran for seven seasons between 2006 and 2011.
Grylls differentiate this series from other previous interactive shows of Netflix. The main star expressed that he is proud of delivering this first-of-its-kind live-action interactive series. He added that You vs. Wild is entirely matchless because the show is giving viewers an all-access pass to explore the world and its landscapes as if the journey lies not on his hand but through the interaction of audience.
Grylls also mentioned in a prepared statement that ‘the stakes are high in this one.’
Big Names Behind the Series
In addition to starring the series, Grylls will also be the executive producer on You vs. Wild together with Chris Grant, Drew Buckley, Ben Silverman, Howard Owens, Rob Buchta, and Delbert Shoopman.
The show has been produced by Electus, A Propagate Company, and Bear Grylls Ventures, while the Director of the series is Ben Simms.
For Netflix, You vs.Wild will be the second piece of interactive content for adults after Bandersnatch late last year.
