Dragon Ball FighterZ, The New Button-Bashing Fighting Game

Here's what I think after playing Dragon Ball FighterZ for the first timePhoto By: Instacodez/Flickr

Remember how Thor saves his kingdom from the enemies? He used his hammer to defeat them all. Then there’s Spiderman who triumphs with his spider webs and Captain America’s ricocheting shield.

Well today, our new heroes need seven balls in to save the world from intergalactic invaders. With more spiky hair than your favorite 90’s boy band, who would resist these Dragon ball fighters?

Dragon Ball FighterZ is now one of the top fighting games released today for eight-gen video game consoles. Although the said gameplay concept is inspired from other fighting games, it is still making its way in the world of gaming.

The new Dragon Ball FighterZ is a 2D fighting game developed by Arc System Works and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. Based on the Dragon Ball franchise, it was initially released a year ago in PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows which flooded most regions in Japan and finally made it to international gaming outlets through Nintendo Switch in September the same year.

How do players play this game?

If you are a kind of person who enjoys action-filled games, this might interest you.

Just like other ‘select me and play’ games, players must choose three characters to form a team from an initial roster of 24. You have to bet on the best players to defeat the opponents and collect the famous dragon balls. One character is controlled and can be switched with one of your chosen characters at any time. If you think that you will be playing the whole level alone, well, there is the ‘assist’ move which allows simultaneous attacks and combos with the entire team.

Basically, the goal here is not just to collect all the powerful dragon balls; your team should also defeat those three enemies to win the game.

What certain attacks should a player use to remain victorious?

If you are a type of gamer who is too competitive, well, the game has several attack moves to defeat your opponents easily.

The Vanish Attack – This particular move is a unique quality of some fighters which enable them to instantly teleport behind an opponent’s character and strike him directly at the back causing great damages.

The Dragon Rush – This is considered as one of the strongest moves a player can possess. This means it can break through an opponent’s guard, and if successful, offers a choice whether to do aerial combos or force the enemy to switch character.

The Super Dash – As the name goes, this is a flying attack which can only be produced by the team lead character. This allows him to break through the opponent’s weaker projectiles, just like a bomb.

The famous ‘Come in Shenron’

The game includes several crucial moves such as ‘Come on Shenron’ which is one of the special qualities of a Dragon ball fighter. Earning this power on a particular level requires a lot of combos and moves. Players have to gather the Dragon balls one by one as the fight heightens and while the character uses any of the mentioned attacks.

Once all seven balls are collected, Shenron grants the player a wish and will be offered the following benefits; increase strength, reviving an ally, or recovering a fighter’s health for the rest of the match.

The characters of the game, and who is ‘Android 21’ anyway?

The main fighters who complete the first roster are Super Saiyan Goku, Vegeta and Android 21. These characters are unlockable through gameplay, and the other eight are released as paid downloadable content. There are several characters to choose such as Captain Ginyu, Frieza (*with the coolest hairstyle ever), Gohan, Gotenks, Piccolo, Trunks, Vegito and many others.

But, what interests me the most, is the character of ‘Android 21’ who was designed exclusively for the game. The new fighter is one of the most undefeatable entities who complete the first roster together with Goku and Vegeta. Most fan said the character matches Son Goku which is the most powerful being in the world of Dragon Ball Z.

Unlocking the fighter in you

Each chapter spreads enemies across a map, and you have to pick who to fight next. The harder the level, the stronger the enemies get. You unlock new characters as you play and discover power-ups that will help you over the increasingly tricky Android opponents. After each fight, you can swap your team members if you find them too weak (*well, you also need stronger allies to defeat Shenron).

I thought this FighterZ is another one of the mediocre games we always roll our eyes on. But, not anymore. Arc System has done an excellent job of redefining the game with its slick animation and fun to play vibe. You will love this game even on your most boring days by starting to master the combo challenges, defeat each arcade mode tier, and finally facing the mighty Shenron on the hard level.

Street Fighter days are over; you can now switch to Dragon Ball FighterZ and start collecting your own seven majestic dragon balls.
