Donald Trump’s State of the Union Address is a widely anticipated event in the US. It is where the commander-in-chief is laying down his achievements and plans for the country. However, some people are looking forward to it for an entirely different reason, it’s a goldmine for internet memes.
After Nancy Pelosi made rounds on the internet for literally clapping back at Donald Trump, another woman also took the internet by storm by doing precisely the opposite of what Nancy Pelosi did. (READ: Nancy Pelosi won the internet today for a sarcastic clap at SOTU)
Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez, one of the women who got elected to office in the recent elections, stood still and refused to give the speech a standing ovation. The poignant expression on her face and her beautifully crafted white clothing, which women in the event wore to symbolically send the message that they are reclaiming the power of women, made her message loud and clear, she doesn’t buy what Trump is saying.
This year’s SOTU did not disappoint the online meme community. Aside from Nancy Pelosi’s clapback and Ocasio-Cortez’ defiance, other memes circulated online including Trump’s tie and his son’s caught sleeping during his speech.
“I stand here ready to work with you to achieve historic breakthroughs for all Americans. Millions of our fellow citizens are watching us now, gathered in this great chamber, hoping that we will govern not as two parties but as one nation,” said Mr. Trump.
And of course, Ocasio-Cortez is not buying it. She wore white together with other women present in the State of the Union, she joined her fellow women on their fight for suffragettes and ending violence against women, which made her expression more dramatic.
Twitter has picked up this hilarious yet powerful reaction from AOC, and it immediately went viral.
People from social media also noticed that the 29 years old is not having any BS today. Some called her a ‘hero.’
Some called the speech “the epitome of hypocrisy” as captions for Ocasio-Cortez’ reaction.
Another said that Ocasio-Cortez’ act of defiance makes him feel like he is being represented, possibly referring to what his reaction would be if should he be invited in the SOTU.
There are also some who called the iconic expression as a ‘rebuttal’ to Donald Trump’s speech.
