Jordan Flash Flood Caused 11 Death And Tourist Evacuate

Flash flood in Jordan

Just two weeks after the incident of a flash flood in Dead sea Area that killed 21 people, mostly children, a flash flood was followed in Jordan that has killed 11 people and has made a forced evacuation of almost 4,000 tourists from the ancient city of Petra. Petra is considered to be one of the favorite tourist spots in Jordan.

According to the civil defense officials and government spokeswoman Jumana Ghuneimat, death toll rises early Saturday when another body was found in the south region of Madaba.

The search for missing people is still ongoing. Rescue teams and even helicopters are roaming around to search for five people whose car was washed away by the flood in Madaba, south-west of the capital, Amman. Rainstorm also caused a state of emergency in the port city of Aqaba. Because of the incident, the main road that connects the capital to the south was also cut off.

The tourists that were in Petra during the flash flood happened went for higher ground on Friday as the water rose high through a narrow canyon leading to the Treasury, Petra’s main attraction. Reports say that the flood even reached as high as 4m (13ft). With this, tourists were brought to a safe area.

Heavy rainfall is still ongoing and is expected to have another landfall. Residents in affected areas are advised to have an early evacuation in their homes. To accommodate the people that are affected by the flood, the government announced that mosques are open for temporary shelter. Universities and schools are also closed according to the government on Saturday.

Because of the tragic accident happened last month that led 18 children killed due to the flash flood that swept them away while they had their school trip in the Dead Sea Region, a public outcry and after a parliamentary committee found negligence in the incident, a forced resignation from the education and tourism minister was made.

We hope and pray that there will be no more dead bodies, missing people will be found alive and safe from this tragedy.
