Mesothelioma: The 5Ws And 1H

5Ws and 1H

Despite current and upcoming health innovations, various health concerns continue to rise. However, these concerns do not stop researchers from coming up with ideas to improve health.

According to Cancer Research UK, mesothelioma is a type of cancer that mostly starts in the layer of tissue that covers each lung. It also begins in the layer of tissue in the abdomen that surrounds the digestive organs, but this type of mesothelioma is a rare occurrence.

NHS.uk reported that this type of cancer affects more men than women. Most cases of the disease are found in people aged 60-80.

It also said that exposure to asbestos, a group of minerals made of microscopic fibers that used to be utilized in construction usually triggers mesothelioma. The fibers quickly get into the lungs and damages them over time. The problem is not immediately evident as it takes about 20 years of exposure to asbestos to develop the disease.

The disease starts in the mesothelial cells, those who cover most of our internal body. 75 percent of mesothelioma is found in the chest while 25 percent are located in the abdomen.

NHS also reported that the symptoms of mesothelioma found in the lungs include chest pains, shortness of breath, fatigue, fever and excessive sweating especially at night, persistent coughing, loss of appetite and unexplained weight loss, and swollen fingertips.

They also provided symptoms of mesothelioma found in the abdominal lining include tummy pain or swelling, feeling or being sick, loss of appetite and unexplained weight loss, and diarrhea or constipation.

To detect the disease, there are several ways to do such. These include x-ray, CT scan, fluid drainage, and thoracoscopy or laparoscopy.

As of now, there is no definite cure for mesothelioma, but treatment could control it. Possible treatment methods include chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery. Fluid in the lungs could also be drained at home, depending on the case.
