Leigh Castergine, Former Mets Exec Fired for Having Baby Out of Wedlock, Files Lawsuit

Leigh Castergine, former senior vice president of ticket sales with the New York Mets, filed a lawsuit against the Mets. She says she was rewarded with more than $200,000 in raises and bonus money, but was fired when she became pregnant out of wedlock last year, according to the suit filed in Brooklyn Federal Court.

Castergine’s suit alleges that co-owner Jeff Wilpon was degrading toward her in the presence of colleagues, “From the time Castergine announced her pregnancy in September 2013, Wilpon began to humiliate Castergine and disparage her in front of colleagues,” the suit alleges.

“He frequently humiliated Castergine in front of others by, among other things, pretending to see if she had an engagement ring on her finger and openly stating in a meeting of the Team’s all-male senior executives that he is ‘morally opposed’ to Castergine ‘having this baby without being married,’” the suit states.

“Wilpon told her that, when she gets a ring, she will make more money and get a bigger bonus,” the suit states.

Wilpon told Castergine that “something had changed” in Castergine after the birth of her child — “with still no ring on her finger,” the suit states. “Wilpon told her that she was no longer as ‘aggressive” as she used to be.”

Leigh Castergine gave birth to her baby in March, and returned to work in June, but was urged by other executives to quit, she alleged.

In August, the Mets raised issues about her performance, but offered her a severance package if she would promise not to sue or say negative things about the team and Wilpon.

Castergine said she was fired on Aug. 26, three minutes after her lawyer sent an email to the team claiming that she was being discriminated against.

Castergine is suing Wilpon personally as well as the team for damages.

The Mets have not commented on the lawsuit.
