Like something straight out of a scary movie, porcelain dolls being left on the doorsteps of girls to whom they have an eerie resemblance too.
At least eight families received the dolls in the Talega community of San Clemente, California with all of the girls targeted around 10 years old. The girls are connected through school or activities they participate in, authorities said.
“Families in each of the homes where porcelain dolls were left voiced concern that the dolls resembled their daughters,” the Sheriff’s Department stated in a news release.
No notes or threatening messages were attached to the dolls, which Lt. Jeff Hallock called “creepy or very unusual.”
The dolls were taken into evidence and investigators started trying to determine what prompted someone to leave them. They weren’t being considered a crime, Hallock said.
“Is it a prank? Is there some specific motivation?” Hallock had said earlier. “Obviously, there’s an indication by some the parents that the dolls resemble their daughters. We’re talking about children here. Anything that has the potential to involve children causes us some concern.”
However, by Thursday, investigators learned that a female adult who lived in the community and attended church had placed them on the porches of the girls and her intentions were good.
“Investigators made contact with the female adult who admitted to placing the porcelain dolls on the porch of the various residences in the community. Investigators have concluded that her motivation was out of goodwill and that she intended it as a kind gesture,” the news release says of the woman whom authorities have not identified. “There will be no further investigation of this case.”
The woman said she was clearing out an old doll collection and thought of some young girls in the neighborhood who might enjoy them, Hallock said.
