A grieving father turned to the help of Reddit for a simple request of removing the tubes from his daughters photo.

Nathen Steffel, whose daughter died last Thursday, posted a brief request on Reddit: “My daughter recently passed away after a long battle in the children’s hospital,” he wrote.

His daughter Sophia was born May 30 and lived just six weeks, he said. She died from complications from a hepatic hemangioma, a liver tumor, he wrote on Reddit.

“Since she was in the hospital her whole life, we never were able to get a photo without all her tubes. Can someone remove the tubes from this photo?”

What he got in return was huge, something he didn’t really expect. Reddit commenters started submitting beautifully retouched photos and even drawings for the grieving father.

“I didn’t really want all the publicity, I just wanted a picture,” Nathen Steffel wrote in an email to TODAY Parents. “What I received was a whole lot of love and support from complete strangers.”

“I was overwhelmed with the response I got,” he told TODAY Parents. “My wife and I were so grateful so many people took the time out of their own lives to either send a nice message of sympathy or an awesome drawing. They couldn’t have made this father any happier.”

The pictures were often accompanied by heartfelt well-wishes and messages from others who had been through similar experiences in their life.

Those gifts go a long way, especially for Steffel. He posted his gratitude on the Reddit thread:

“This is really amazing. Everyone you have made my day. All I wanted was a nice picture. What I received was a lot of love and support from a bunch of strangers. A long with a lot of great photos, drawings and paintings. Thanks everyone!”

He and his wife plan to hang up a few of their favorites.
