An earthquake with a magnitude of 7.9 struck Monday about 15 miles from Little Sitkin Island, Alaska. The earthquake had a depth of 71 miles, according to seismologists.
The Alaska earthquake set off a tsunami warning, but it generated only a small wave. The earthquake occurred about 12:53 p.m. local time with officials sending out the initial tsunami warnings for coastal areas from Nikolski to Attu, along with the Pribilof Islands to the north, according to the Anchorage Daily News.
The National Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska, issued a tsunami warning for a portion of the Aleutians stretching from Nikolski to Attu. “Widespread dangerous coastal flooding accompanied by powerful currents are possible and may continue for hours after tsunami arrival,” the NTWC bulletin said.
The tsunami warning was downgraded to an advisory a couple of hours after it struck, and the advisory was canceled by 4:45 p.m.
Jeff Freymueller, with the Alaska Volcano Observatory, told the Daily News that the observatory monitored seismic activity in the Aleutians following the earthquake for any evidence that it triggered “earthquake swarms.” He said there was no evidence of volcanic activity tied to the earthquake as of Monday afternoon.
While it’s “certainly possible that you could have volcanic activity triggered” by earthquake swarms, the AVO is monitoring the area mostly to avoid being “taken by surprise that we may see a change,” Freymueller said.
On Monday afternoon, the AVO hadn’t seen any indications of volcanic activity possibly due to the earthquake, he said.
Aftershocks were occurring in the area Monday afternoon, Natasha Ruppert, seismologist at the Alaska Earthquake Information Center said. “We expect there will be quite a few.”
An aftershock of magnitude 6.0 struck the same area around 1:11 p.m., while a magnitude-5.9 quake followed at 1:30, according to the USGS. By 3 p.m., seven earthquakes of magnitude 3.7 or higher had occurred in the area.
There were no reports of damage or injuries.
The last major U.S. quake, a 7.9 tremor near Alaska’s Denali National Park, occurred Nov. 3, 2002.
Tsunami warning issued for Alaska after Earthquake
A magnitude-8.0 earthquake was widely felt in communities along Alaska’s sparsely populated Aleutian Islands on Monday, but there were no immediate reports of damage.

Climate Change Is In The US Now – Scientists Said On Severe Condition
The US is now facing a big problem with climate change. If not prevented, it will cost hundreds of billions of dollars, or worse, more than 10% of its GDP by the end of the century to the country. Not to mention the damage it will have in the economy, health, and quality of life.
This devastating news was supposed to come out by December, but it seems like Trump administration cannot wait any longer as it needs to be taken action before it is too late. According to the 4th National Climate Assessment, the future risks from climate change depends on the decision that will have today. Skipping another day on spreading this kind of alarming news will just make it worse.
The director of the Technical Support Unit at the NOAA National Centers for Environmental Information, David Easterling also gave an opinion about the status of the climate change. He says that there is no external interference in the report’s development. What the Earth is experiencing right now is unlike any other.
“THE GLOBAL AVERAGE TEMPERATURE IS MUCH HIGHER AND IS RISING MORE RAPIDLY THAN ANYTHING MODERN CIVILIZATION HAS EXPERIENCED, AND THIS WARMING TREND CAN ONLY BE EXPLAINED BY HUMAN ACTIVITIES,” EASTERLING SAID.
US President Donald Trump tweeted, “Whatever happened to global warming?”. He posted the tweet after Washington experienced a blast of icy weather this week. His question though was answered by his group of scientists. They say, without mentioning any particular person that the climate change is already in the US..now. It is already in a severe situation, deadly, and if we do not do anything about it, the case will be fatal.
This vital matter is now calling the attention of the government after numbers of disasters happened in different countries. Affected dams in South Carolina; failing crops in the withered Great Plains; a rise in insect-borne disease in Florida. At the same time, this news is to assert the White House to prioritize economic growth over environmental regulation.
Aside from the government’s move against climate change, it is also time for us to make an action to prevent or at least delay it. People should take part in creating a significant difference to avoid this kind of scenario. Because at the end of the day, we will also be the one who will benefit from the significant change.
Death Toll Now Rises At 1,350 After Tsunami Disaster In Indonesia
According to the agency, nearly 1,350 dead bodies are found on the island of Sulawesi, and it is fearfully still growing as the day comes by.
Part of the 1,350 dead bodies found are 34 Indonesian students that were found under a church that was buried by a mudslide. This group of students located in the church was part of the 86 students who were declared missing from a Bible Camp in Jonooge Church Training Centre. But the remaining 52 students are still missing.
The big tsunami that hit Indonesia last Friday has become the worst nightmare for everyone. A 7.5 magnitude earthquake that is followed by a big tsunami that immersed the island of Sulawesi, particularly in the city of Palu.
Because of the dilemma that had happened to the people of Palu, aside from the growing numbers of dead bodies, survivors are at the same time suffering from hunger and thirst and a place where to stay in, especially elders and children.
Aside from the missing students, rescuers are also looking out for survivors or dead bodies in a four-storey hotel building that was also destroyed by the earthquake and tsunami. Out of 50 estimated people that were inside the Roa Roa hotel, nine dead bodies have found, and three are alive.
Some of us may be wondering if there is any help from others are coming that will give food and water to the survivors. According to Chief Ari Dono Sukmanto of Deputy National Police, there is food supply coming in, and they are just waiting for it to be distributed to the victims.
With thousands of people in Palu, not all of them can be accommodated at once because of less help from the rescuers, treatments for the injured and transportation to bring them to a safe place. One of the reasons why the President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo is struggling to ask assistance and send more rescuers in the affected area is that the bridge that is connecting to Palu is damaged, some of the roads are blocked and busted telecommunications that make them difficult to contact for help.
It is very frustrating seeing this kind of incident. We hope and pray that more help will come from different countries to save more lives. Stay tuned for more updates.
Videos of Bison Fleeing Yellowstone have People Questioning Volcano Eruption
Viral videos of Bison fleeing Yellowstone National Park have rumors swirling that the super-volcano located under the park would be erupting soon.
Yellowstone National Park dismissed those rumors on Friday about the super-volcano erupting soon. Amy Bartlett said the bison were simply running deeper into the park. “It was a spring-like day and they were frisky. Contrary to online reports, it’s a natural occurrence and not the end of the world.”
The supervolcano was found last year to be 2.5 times larger than previously thought, leaving some to speculate an eruption is well overdue. If and when it erupts, the volcano could potentially spew ash over a large area of North America.
“It would be a global event,” Jamie Farrell of the University of Utah told the Associated Press last year. “There would be a lot of destruction and a lot of impacts around the globe.”
The last major eruption is thought to have happened around 640,000 years ago and sent ash across the entire North America.
Bob Smith of the University of Utah said researchers are unsure when the supervolcano will erupt again. Two other eruptions happened, one 2.1 million years ago, and the other 1.3 million years ago. One theory is that eruptions happen every 700,000 years ago, but Smith said more data is needed to back that theory up.
The rumors started after the 4.8 magnitude earthquake that struck near the Norris Geyser Basin in the northwest section of Yellowstone on March 30, 2014. This was the largest earthquake at the park since 1980 which leads people to believe the volcano might be erupting soon.
Multiple videos of animals fleeing the area have been posted online recently, one of which shows a herd of buffalo allegedly leaving the park and “running for their lives.”
While there is no way to predict the Yellowstone volcano eruption, many believe the reaction of the animals could signal some kind of alert.
“Whether I believe this, or whether I don’t believe the story or not, I don’t know. I can tell you this story I saw this morning about the buffaloes running the street … whether or not it’s because of any activity in Yellowstone or not, I don’t know,” said blogger Jay Lee. “But I’ll tell you this, whatever the case may be, that their running away from Yellowstone is an alert of some sort.”
“It also could be from this video, where poachers are killing them, chasing them, abusing them, running them around,” Lee added. “Could be hundreds of things for them to be running. I wanted you to listen [to the videos] and make up your own mind on what to think.”
Animals Leaving Yellowstone? Earthquakes and Seismic Activity
Herds of bison running for their lives on the public roadways and they were not being chased or rounded up, the bison were running down the mountain slopes onto roadways running right past a filming crew. They detect something vast and deadly. The Yellowstone Supervolcano is the only thing there that would fit the bill.
