One person is dead and two others are hurt after an explosion on Wednesday morning at a fireworks plant in Washington state.
The call for help came just before 10 a.m. Wednesday from Entertainment Fireworks. A small building at the facility was destroyed by the fire.
A 74-year-old man died at the scene with severe injuries while waiting to be airlifted, and a 25-year-old man was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle with burns and trauma, according to Thurston County Sheriff’s Lt. Greg Elwin.
A 52-year old man was transported by private vehicle to Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia.
No fireworks are manufactured at the location — the company puts on displays and distributes fireworks.
Investigators say the three men were assembling fireworks for an upcoming show when the explosion happened. A neighbor described seeing fireworks shooting 100 feet into the air. Another also said it was like a grand finale at a fireworks show, except most of the action was on the ground.
The sheriff’s office is now assisting the state Department of Labor & Industries and other agencies. A cause of the explosion has not been determined, Elwin said. The Sheriff’s Office reports there’s no indication of criminal activity in the explosion.
Investigators from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are at the scene.
On its website, Entertainment Fireworks says it’s the largest fireworks company based in Washington. It puts on fireworks displays and distributes fireworks. The website says it has 21 buildings on its property.
