Texas Bar Sign About Domestic Violence Sparks Outrage

Bar Sign Domestic Violence

A piano bar in Texas has removed their sign that read, “I like my beer like I like my violence. Domestic.” after outrage.

Scruffy Duffies in Plano, Texas posted the horrific statement on its chalkboard menu this past weekend. Courtney Williams discovered it when she went to the bar with friends Saturday night.

Williams wrote on Facebook that she had to ask multiple managers to take down the “joke” — which was apparently written by a female bartender.

She says the bar removed the sign, but only after repeated requests by her and her friends. Before the bar removed it.

A statement from the bar posted on Facebook says the message was jokingly written by a female employee without approval and was obviously in bad taste.

“It has come to our attention that one of our female employees wrote something offensive without owner’s approval. Domestic violence is something our family unfortunately has overcome in the past, therefore this subject is one we don’t take lightly. We are currently investigating the situation and proper actions will be taken immediately. We thank you for your patience and again want to ensure this is not our stance.”

It’s an apology that Williams says doesn’t go far enough. “It’s like they’re trying to say it’s less bad because it was a woman or it’s worse because it was a woman. For them, her gender shouldn’t matter.”

Scruffy Duffies’ owners took action on Tuesday. A regional manager told News 8 the manager who was on duty was indefinitely suspended without pay, but an owner suggested that manager could lose his job.

The regional manager also said a new system of checks and balances is in place for any sign that is posted in the bar. All messages henceforth will require approval.

Scruffy Duffies is also making a donation to Hope’s Door, and inviting shelter representatives to hold a sensitivity training class for employees.

“When one in four women are affected by domestic violence — and in Collin County alone last year we had over 12,000 incidents of domestic violence — then this isn’t something we joke about,” said Vanessa Vaughter, the education program manager at Hope’s Door, a women’s shelter in Plano.
