Uninsured Americans Reaches Lowest Rate Since 2008 Thanks to Obamacare

A recent Gallop poll released on Monday, showed 15.6% of Americans don’t have health insurance, marking the lowest rate since 2008.

African-Americans and low-income Americans saw the most drop in the uninsured rate.

Among people with household incomes of less than $36,000 a year, the share of uninsured dropped by 3.2 percentage points from levels at the end of 2013.

African-Americans saw their uninsured rate drop by 3.3 percentage points.

Hispanics remained the most likely not to be insured, with 37 percent uninsured, though the level dropped 1.7 percentage points in the first quarter, according to the poll of 43,500 adult Americans between January and March.

Gallup interviewed 43,562 adults by telephone from January 2 to March 31. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 1 percentage point.

“The Affordable Care Act, commonly referred to as ‘Obamacare’ appears to be accomplishing its goal of increasing the percentage of Americans with health insurance coverage,” the report said.

According to Gallup poll, “the uninsured rate dropped by about the same amount among adults aged 26 to 64 as it did among those aged 18-25.”

Last week, The White House reported a total of 7.1 million private insurance enrollments through the Affordable Care Act’s health insurance exchanges, exceeding most expectations.

“This survey and other independent analyses highlight a historic expansion in coverage,” said Aaron Albright, a spokesman for the Health and Human Services department.

The White House recently announced that Americans who began but did not complete enrollment in the Affordable Care Act’s health exchanges by the March 31 deadline have until April 15 to finish the process.

Number of Uninsured Hits Five-Year Low

The number of Americans who report being uninsured is at its lowest level since 2008, according to a new Gallup poll.
