It’s free pancake day at IHOP.
Until 10 p.m., go to your local IHOP and ask for a free short stack, then donate to Children’s Miracle Network, which provides treatment to sick and injured kids at Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals.
Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals raises funds and awareness for 170 member hospitals that provide 32 million treatments each year to children in the United States and Canada.
The goal is to raise $3 million nationwide for CMN and other charities. $13 million has been raised through National Pancake Day since 2006 when they started.
On IHOP’s website they say, “On March 4, 2014, guests from around the country will once again celebrate National Pancake Day at IHOP restaurants and enjoy a free short stack of Buttermilk pancakes*. In return for the free pancakes, guests will be asked to consider leaving a donation for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals… or other designated local charities.”
Last year, IHOP served four million pancakes.
IHOP giving away free pancakes leads to their biggest profitable days of the year. The reason being, when people come in for the free pancakes, they end up ordering something else to go with their free IHOP pancakes.
Patrick Lenow, a spokesman for DineEquity, the corporate arm of IHOP says, “Depending on the restaurant, it’s double or triple the typical day’s business.”
Pancake day is typically celebrated on “Fat Tuesday” or the last day before Lent. This year, Fat Tuesday occurs on March 4, 2014.
National Pancake Day is a tradition that dates back several centuries to when the English prepped for fasting during Lent. Strict rules prohibited the eating of all dairy products during Lent, so pancakes were made to use up the supply of eggs, milk, butter and other dairy products, hence the name Pancake Tuesday, or Shrove Tuesday.
When you go to your local IHOP know that there is a limit of one free short stack of pancakes per guest. The free pancake offer is only valid at participating restaurants and for dine-in only, while supplies last.
Also, Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals are qualified as 501(c)(3) tax-exempt and donations are tax-deductible.
National Pancake Day
Marking National Pancake Day, IHOP drew hundreds of customers who got a free short stack of buttermilk pancakes in exchange for a donation to the Children’s Miracle Network.
