Coca Cola America the Beautiful Super Bowl Commercial Sparks Outrage on Social Media

Coca Cola America the Beautiful

Coca Cola’s Super Bowl commercial stirred controversy for their salute to the country’s cultural diversity.

Coca Cola’s Super Bowl commercial titled “It’s Beautiful,” features the patriotic song “America the Beautiful” sung in eight languages including Spanish, Arabic and Tagalog. The ad shows people of different ethnicities.

“For 127 years, Coca-Cola has been proud to be a part of bringing friends and families together while memories are made,” said Katie Bayne, President, North America Brands, Coca-Cola North America. “With ‘It’s Beautiful,’ we are simply showing that America is beautiful, and Coke is for everyone.”

Bayne adds, “‘It’s Beautiful’ is exactly what Coca-Cola is all about: celebrating the diversity that makes this country great and the fact that anyone can thrive here and be happy. We hope the ad gets people talking and thinking about what it means to be proud to be American.”

Many took to various social network sites to express their outrage at the song being performed in any language other than English.

The commercial immediately drew a lot of controversy, with hashtags such as #speakenglish and #thisisamerica on Twitter, and plenty of other discussions on Facebook.

Some were positive about the commercial.

@bethanyisaBAMF says, “Shoutout to Coca Cola because that commercial was beautiful and inspiring. America is not only for white English speakers”

While others weren’t happy that Coca Cola played “America the Beautiful” in any other language than English. The hashtag #SpeakAmerican began trending, as people debated on both sides.

@vonzion tweeted, “Hey @CocaCola This is America. English, please. #SB48”

@MasonAvery15 says, “What was Coca-Cola thinkin singing America the Beautiful in a different language? The song is AMERICA the Beautiful, and we speak ENGLISH”

@iResistAll tweeted, “WTF? @CocaCola has America the Beautiful being sung in different languages in a #SuperBowl commercial? We speak ENGLISH here, IDIOTS.”

@modelbebegirl said, “Hey @CocaCola I will never drink your products again… You sing AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL in English!!!!!!”

@J_Ottaviani says, “Worst commercial by far goes to Coca Cola….Sing the song the right way…IN ENGLISH”

Even with outrage, Coca-Cola plans to debut a 90-second version of the spot during the opening ceremony of the 2014 winter games.

The Coca Cola Super Bowl video currently has 467,392 views and has been welcomed along with other companies such as Cheerios in attempting to represent a broader demographic of consumers.

  1. For those people who complained about the commercial. Most Americans came from somewhere else, and did not speak american when they came. We have new immigrants coming to America, and all Coke did was try to include these new immigrants into our society. When you live your life with anger and hate, you only hurt yourself, not others!
