Taco Bell has announced they will be expanding the small test run of waffle tacos into more restaurants, along the side of it’s full breakfast menu.
The Taco Bell waffle taco was the top seller during breakfast hours at the five Southern California restaurants where they were tested earlier this year.
Now the company wants to see how the waffle tacos — made with scrambled eggs, sausage and a side of syrup — in addition to a full breakfast menu will sell in about 100 restaurants which include, Fresno, California, Omaha, Nebraska and Chattanooga, Tennessee starting Thursday.
The waffle Taco has undergone a few tweaks here and there since it was introduced back in March. The shape of the waffle taco, which has 460 calories and 30 grams of fat, was changed to make it easier to hold the stuffing.
If it does as well in the expanded test as it did at the five locations, it will be added to the national menu.
Brian Niccol, president of Taco Bell, said the idea is to get a better idea of how restaurants will be able to handle the added pressure from the waffle tacos, “You only get one shot when you go with big items,” he said.
Taco Bell already offers breakfast at about 850 locations in 10 Western states, and has been trying new items such as the waffle taco before rolling it out to its 6,000 U.S. locations. Also being tested in the additional locations starting Thursday are a yogurt parfait and oatmeal.
Yum Brands Inc., the parent company of Taco Bell, sees breakfast as its next big opportunity. In a conference call with analysts last month, Yum President Richard Carucci told Huffington Post that breakfast has accounted for about 4 percent of sales in restaurants where it’s been available.

A Taco Bell spokesman, said the company is testing the waffle taco in a handful of Southern California restaurants, “We’re pleased with the initial reaction from our customers and if the waffle taco does well in testing, we’ll roll it out to all our restaurants that serve breakfast.”
