7-11 Free Slurpee Day

It’s free Slurpee day at 7-Eleven. To mark 7-Eleven’s 86th birthday, the chain is offering free small Slurpees Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at participating stores.

“Do you have 2 empty hands? Fill one with a free small Slurpee drink TODAY at @7Eleven from 11 AM to 7 PM. #7ElevenDay,” the company tweeted.

It gets better too. 7-Eleven is throwing out the 7.11 ounce Slurpees that they have given away for the past decade and replacing it with a 12 ounce Slurpee, to make their unofficial birthday, July 11.

“Moms asked us for cups with lids,” Laura Gordon, 7-Eleven vice president of marketing and brand innovation told USA Today. “That means less mess in the car.”

“7-Eleven Day, July 11, occurs at the approximate midpoint of summer and the Slurpee season when summer fun is in high gear. It also marks a milestone for 7-Eleven when we raise a collective Slurpee toast and dance a crazy dance to celebrate our birthday and all things 7-Eleven,” said Laura Gordon, 7-Eleven vice president of marketing and brand innovation. “We promised #Awesummer this year with more fun, more free stuff and more surprises, and summer is far from over. There’s lots more to come.”

Gordon told USA Today she estimated that 7-Eleven will give away about seven million Slurpees, at a retail value of $7.6 million. “It helps us reconnect with people who love the SLURPEE,” Gordon says.

In a press release, 7-Eleven explains it’s run with Slurpees. July 11 marks the day that the world’s No. 1 convenience retailer celebrates its many milestones. 7-Eleven, the world’s first convenience store, began its run in the summer of 1927 when a Southland Ice Company employee started selling bread, milk and eggs on an ice dock in a Dallas suburb. Since that inauspicious start, “convenience” has become big business. The small ice company has grown into a major international retailing chain with approximately 10,100 7-Eleven stores in North America and more than 50,700 stores worldwide.

7-Eleven has celebrated its birthday on July 11 for decades, but it wasn’t until its 75th birthday in 2002 that its stores began hosting birthday parties coast-to-coast with free Slurpee drinks for its customers.

7-Eleven also introduced a Youtube video presenting the Slurpee dance, new Slurpee flavors, party favors, a mobile phone app and Slurpee-Brand merchandises.

This summer’s flavors include strawberry lemonhead and sugar-free mango lemonade.
