With nearly two million followers, AP twitter account was hacked and tweeted the message: “Breaking: Two Explosions in the White house and Barack Obama is injured.”
‘AP Twitter’ began to trend on Twitter.
No other media outlet’s reported on this attack and injury to the President.
“The president is fine,” said spokesman Jay Carney. “I was just with him.”
Other Associated Press Twitter accounts quickly confirmed that the Tweet was false and to disregard it. The AP released an alert several minutes later saying, “The tweet about an attack at the White House is false. We will advise more as soon as possible.”
“That’s a bogus tweet,” an AP spokesperson initially told NBC News, “That’s all I have for you right now.”
The Dow Jones dropped suddenly to 14,555 from 14,699 after the AP tweet was sent. Within 20 minutes the Dow had fully recovered, hovering near 14,684 by 1:30 p.m. EDT.
“The market is absolutely on kind of tenterhooks and with any news that has to do with any suspected terrorism, any implication of terrorism, and the AP twitter feed being hacked sent this market into a tailspin in about a minute and a half,” CNBC’s Sue Herera said about the Dow dropping soon after AP Twitter was hacked. “It shows you how sensitive this market is right now.”
The AP Twitter account has been temporarily suspended by Twitter while the situation is worked out. The news organization added that the AP tweet came after hackers made repeated attempts to steal the passwords of AP journalists.
In the past few days, the AP discovered that malware had infected some of its company computers, according to an AP spokeswoman.
The Associated Press quickly put out a Google+ release stating what happened, “Hackers have compromised the main Twitter account of The Associated Press, sending out an erroneous tweet about an attack at the White House. The tweet, which said that there had been two explosions at the White House and President Barack Obama was injured, came after hackers made repeated attempts to steal the passwords of AP journalists. The AP said Tuesday that its Twitter account had been suspended following a hack and said it was working to correct the issue. The cyberattack is the latest in a string targeting international media organizations. The tweet put out by hackers briefly sent the Dow Jones Industrial Average sharply lower.”
