Going in to have your wisdom teeth removed is supposed to be a minor surgery, not a nightmare. For one family, that’s exactly what it has ended up to be, a nightmare with questions left unanswered.
A 24-year old San Diego entrepreneur, Marek Lapinski died on March 21 when he underwent surgery to have his wisdom teeth pulled. An ambulance report shows Lapinski had began to cough during surgery so doctors administered propofol. Things begin to get fishy from here.
Marek Lapinski went into cardiac arrest shortly after. He was immediately taken to the hospital where he died. The ambulance report also noted a piece of gauze was found in Marek’s airway.
“I was told by the hospital they weren’t sure if this was all caused from him choking on a piece of gauze,” said his mother, April Lapinski. “Somebody was not paying attention at some point.”
Marek Lapinski sister, Natalie who is also a nurse, said she examined Marek’s medical records, and found her brother was given at least six different sedatives by the surgeon. “In talking to the nurse at the hospital, from what they told me, he was given way too much anesthesia,” his sister said.
“The pulmonary doctor at the hospital told me it looked like an overdose to him,” said April Lapinski. “He had no health issues we were aware of. This was very strange and unexpected.”
Dr. Steven Paul, the oral surgeon who administered the Mark Lapinski’s wisdom teeth procedure was investigated by Fox 5 San Diego. The state of Nevada shows Dr. Paul as a registered oral surgeon and has a permit to practice general anesthesia. He is in good standing with the state and has no formal complaints against him.
Fox 5 received a statement from Dr. Paul’s lawyer saying, “Dr. Paul provides patients with state of the art services and monitoring for his patients…No surgical procedure is without risk… the circumstances regarding Mr. Lapinski’s complications are not completely understood. What is understood is Mr. Lapinski’s complications occurred despite the fact there were no apparent contraindications for his oral surgery.”
“He may have been without oxygen for 10 minutes,” his sister said. “After a couple of minutes with no oxygen to your brain you just basically don’t have one anymore. Those are just the facts.”
With too many complications and too many questions left unanswered, the family wants the Riverside County prosecutor as well as medical investigators to look into the procedures used.
The results of Lapinski’s autopsy are pending.
