When it comes to sharing happy news with others, those not in the media spotlight will usually share the news with family and friends. For people that the media spotlight shines on, their good fortune is not only shared with their inner circle but reported to complete strangers as well. Being that they both are used to reporting a news story, Stephanie Gosk and Jenna Wolfe became the story as weekend “Today” show anchor Wolfe appeared on Wednesday’s “Today” show to announce the happy news. That news is that Wolfe is roughly five months pregnant and announced she is engaged to her girlfriend, Stephanie Gosk.
Jenna Wolfe, 39, wrote in her blog post that “My girlfriend, Stephanie Gosk, and I are expecting a baby girl the end of August.” Anyone that missed the posting of the happy news needed only to watch Wednesday’s episode of “Today” as Jenna announced that as of today, she is roughly five months pregnant.
For Wolfe, she has been labeled as the network’s daredevil and admits to openly in a blog post by saying, “Of all the jaw-dropping, head-turning and eye-popping things I’ve ever told my friends and family (‘I swam with killer sharks,’ ‘I jet-packed 30 feet out of the water,’ ‘I scaled the tallest building in Canada’), nothing garnered more shock and awe (and, yes, some tears) than when I told people I was pregnant. Just writing those words — ‘I’m pregnant’ — is surreal to me.”
Though Wolfe may be known as a daredevil, Gosk is not the type of person who reports the news safely in a studio behind a desk. In fact, those that watch her reports have seen her traveling around the world in order to report on a variety of big news stories.
In a blog post, Wolfe writes: “Stephanie, a foreign correspondent here at NBC, spent years in war-torn countries, risking life and limb in the most dangerous places on earth to tell amazing stories. … Between the two of us, we’ve seen and we’ve done more than most will in a lifetime. And yet both of us agree that THIS little girl will be the biggest and best adventure of our lives.”
Since Wolfe is pregnant, she will be writing an ongoing blog describing the experience. She writes, “Two years into a great relationship and we felt like we wanted to share our adventures with a wide-eyed, little person. The more we talked about it, the better the idea seemed. And so in December, we embarked on Operation Baby. And might I just add that despite the morning sickness, it’s been the best decision we’ve ever made.”
The news about the happy couple was not limited to a blog post or an announcement on the “Today” show. Wolfe and Gosk spoke with People magazine that also announces their news this week. Wolfe tells the magazine that “I don’t want to bring my daughter into a world where I’m not comfortable telling everyone who I am and who her mother is.” Gosk, who is 40, said, “The beauty is that we live in a time where there’s no need for secrecy,” Gosk, 40, said. “This is a spectacular moment for us.”
The couple used artificial insemination from an anonymous donor after they reached the decision that Wolfe would be the one to carry the child. Jenna told People that “We were constantly on the road, juggling a thousand balls at once,” she told the mag. “It’s a miracle we got it all together.”
Soon, it was time for Jenna to experience what every pregnant mother loves the most; morning sickness. In her first blog post regarding the pregnancy, Wolfe wrote, “She made the first four months brutal for me … B-R-U-T-A-L.” There were days when all I could eat were Saltine crackers, Apple Jacks dry cereal and plain pasta. Let’s just say I have a newfound respect for any woman anywhere who tells me they’ve experienced morning sickness.”
Though the proud couple plans on getting married, the main focus now is the baby. Gosk admitted that “For a long time I had feared I would never have a child.”
Wolfe admits that she doesn’t know what a breast pump is or how to change a diaper; however, she is happy to learn. She blogged that “As a kid, I would have chosen raising my adrenaline over raising children any day of the week. But then a funny thing happened on my way to adulthood … I grew up. I ran smack into the old nursery rhyme: “First comes love. Then comes marriage. Then comes Jenna pushing a baby carriage.” Though she said that her life “didn’t quite unfold as rhymed,” the end result is “awfully close.”
