George King was born six weeks ago weighing in at 15 pounds, 7 ounces, twice the size of an average baby.
One would think, weighing in at that much would be a record. Well, someone already holds that crown. Instead, baby George King is United Kingdom’s second-biggest newborn naturally.
“He’s a little miracle—well, a big miracle, really,” Jade King, George’s mother told the BBC.
Shockingly, no one realized how big George was until his head had emerged, at which point his shoulders got temporarily stuck and he went without oxygen for five minutes, reducing his chance of survival to 10 percent.
“That’s when, sort of, everything kicked off, really. There was about 20-odd doctors in the room, and that’s when it got really scary,” King recalled.
Once the baby was born, he was given only a 10 percent chance of survival. He was then transferred from Cheltenham to another hospital, in Bristol. He was kept there for four and a half weeks and then went home, and recently received normal results from an MRI.
George has only gained a pound since birth, and has been wearing clothes sized for a 3-to-6-month old since the day he was born.
Doctors are unsure why George was born weighing 15 pounds. The medical term is called macrosomia, but often times the condition is caused by the mother having had gestational diabetes during her pregnancy, according to the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Brooklyn-based midwife Miriam Schwarzschild told Yahoo! fetal macrosomia can contribute to post-birth hemorrhaging, and other risks include “enlarged organs, a fractured clavicle, and, like in George’s case, oxygen deprivation.”
Schwarzschild added she found it “bizarre” that the the King’s doctors were so surprised by baby George’s size. “You estimate the fetal weight, always,” she said. “I mean, you didn’t ever feel her or talk to her or measure her? That doesn’t make any sense.”
15 pound baby George is doing fine today.
According to the Guinness World Records, Ann Bates gave birth to the biggest newborn ever, in 1879 in Ohio, with the baby weighing in at a whopping 23 pounds, 12 ounces. He died within a day. But a 22-pound, 8-ounce baby born in Italy, in 1955, survived.
