Netflix and Facebook are joining together to allow subscribers to see what their friends have watched.
U.S. members will be able to connect their Netflix account to Facebook and agree to share their favorite TV shows and movies. Through this integration, new recommendations will appear in the subscriber’s Netflix queue under rows labeled “Friends’ Favorites” and “Watched by your friends.”
Users who sync their Facebook accounts with Netflix will see two new rows of icons on Netflix that list titles viewed by their Facebook friends, and titles that friends have rated highly.
“There are few better ways to find a movie or TV series you’ll love than hearing about it from your friends,” Netflix product vice president Tom Willerer said in a statement. “Facebook already makes it easy for our international members to connect with friends over TV shows and movies and we’re thrilled to now bring this experience to our U.S. members.”
Netflix says they will be turning on the feature “over the coming days” and expects that all U.S. members will have access to the social feature by the end of the week.
“By default, sharing will only happen on Netflix,” Cameron Johnson, director of product innovation at Netflix, wrote in a blog post. “You’ll see what titles your friends have watched in a new ‘Watched by your friends’ row and what they have rated four or five stars in a new ‘Friends’ Favorites’ row. Your friends will also be able to see what you watch.”
As this new Netflix feature rolls out, subscribers will have the ability to join the two services together, or opt out.
Johnson wants to ensure that Netflix members are in complete control of what gets shared to Facebook. “You can choose not to share a specific title by clicking the ‘Don’t Share This’ button in the player. You can also visit your ‘Social Settings’ in ‘Your Account’ on Netflix.com to turn on additional sharing to Facebook or stop sharing altogether.”
Netflix says that nothing will be automatically posted to Facebook.
“Over the years, Netflix has deepened its Facebook integration to enable people to discover movies through friends and to share what they’re watching,” Facebook director of platform partnerships Justin Osofsky said in a statement. “With their integration, Netflix has a new opportunity to reach more than one billion people on Facebook.”
