Elisabeth Hasselbeck is Reportedly Not Returning to ‘The View’

Elisabeth Hasselbeck Leaving the View

With Joy Behar announcing that she will not be returning to ‘The View’ after the 2012 season ends, rumors started to fly around that Barbara Walters would be leaving the show and that Elisabeth Hasselbeck’s future was unclear.

According to US Weekly, it seems that Hasselbeck will not have a future with the talk show past the 2012 season. They report that a source is claiming the conservative voice of the group is being let go due to market research revealing that her popularity with TV audiences is very low. However, a representative with the show issued a statement to US saying: “Elisabeth Hasselbeck is a valued member of The View and has a long term contract.”

With the popular talk show ‘The View’ needing to consider a replacement for Joy Behar at the end of the 2012 season, it is being reported that another co-host will be leaving as well, although not voluntarily. When Deadline reported recently that Joy Behar, after being on ‘The View’ for almost 17 years, was not going to return after the show ends this season, rumors were circulating that Barbara Walters may decide to call it quits as well. Also, there was speculation that Elisabeth Hasselbeck may leave as well being her future with the show was unclear.

Now, US Weekly has reported Friday that a source told them that Hasselbeck will not return in 2013 after market researchers discovered that her political views were clashing with the views of their audience. The source said, “The viewers they polled all said she was too extreme and right wing. People did not watch the show because of Elisabeth. So they told her yesterday her contract would not be renewed.”

Once US Weekly’s report became public, TV Newser posted a similar story with the site’s Alex Weprin citing two sources who had revealed Hasselbeck was leaving the show. Despite the sources, a representative for ‘The View’ told Weprin that the co-host has a “long-term contract.” What is strange about Hasselbeck’s conservatism being a problem with audiences is that she has been a co-host on the show for almost ten years with there being no apparent fuss.

In November of 2003, 35-year-old Hasselbeck joined the talk show after being a guest-host following Lisa Ling’s decision to leave in 2002. During her 9 ½ years on the show, there have been numerous arguments she has gotten into on the show with her co-hosts such as in 2007 with Rosie O’Donnell over the War in Afghanistan. There was also a heated argument she had in 2012 with Barbara Walters concerning Mitt Romney.

In fact, Hasselbeck’s departure could very well leave ‘The View’ without one of its’ main source of conflicts being that a key feature during the show has been her political disagreements between Behar and Goldberg.

Only time will tell if Hasselbeck’s departure is false or if true, could begin to mark the end of the popular TV talk show.
