Petition Over Kraft Mac & Cheese Dyes

Kraft Macaroni & Cheese is under fire by two food bloggers from North Carolina for the use of Yellow Dye 5 and Yellow Dye 6.

The pair of food bloggers are petitioning Kraft to stop using the artificial coloring in the Macaroni & Cheese. Lisa Leake and Vani Hari, claim the dyes add nothing to the flavor and may even be dangerous to kids’ health.

The bloggers say the food coloring may be associated with hyperactivity in children, allergies and migraine headaches according to research conducted by the Center for Science in the Public Interest. They add that the food additives are contaminated with known carcinogens and are man-made in a lab with chemicals derived from petroleum.

Leake, of Matthews, N.C., and Hari, of Charlotte, have posted a YouTube video showing them taste-testing the U.S. version and the British version (known as Cheesey Pasta), which have “little difference in color and virtually no difference in taste,” says the petition.

The additives in the Kraft Macaroni & Cheese, yellow dye 5 and yellow dye 6 are legal and approved by the Food and Drug Administration, but serve “aesthetic purposes” only, and have “been banned in countries like Norway and Austria and are being phased out in the U.K.,” the petition says.

In their efforts to draw attention to this issue they used a company that’s well known by everyone. “We wanted to make sure we targeted a company that could set an example of providing safer foods, eliminating ingredients that are bad for health reasons, and get away from this double standard.”

Kraft spokesperson Lynne Galia said in a statement, “The safety and quality of our products is our highest priority and we take consumer concerns very seriously. We carefully follow the laws and regulations in the countries where our products are sold. So in the U.S., we only use colors that are approved and deemed safe for food use by the Food and Drug Administration.”

The petition could work just like the one done by a vegetarian food blogger who successfully petitioned Starbucks to stop using crushed bugs (cochineal) to color their drinks.

Tell Kraft To Stop Using Dangerous Food Dyes in Our Mac & Cheese

We recently discovered that several American food products contain harmful additives that are not used — and in some cases banned — in other countries. One of those products is an iconic staple that almost every American, us included, has had at one time or another: Kraft Macaroni and Cheese.

Kraft Macaroni and Cheese in the US contains the artificial food dyes Yellow 5 and Yellow 6. These dyes are not in Kraft Macaroni and Cheese in other countries, including the UK, because they are considered harmful overseas and were removed due to consumer outcry. It’s time we demand the same here in the US!
