Eating Placenta After Birth: Holly Madison Jumps on Trend

Holly Madison Eat Placenta

Holly Madison plans on eating her placenta after giving birth to her daughter with boyfriend Pasquale Rotella.

Holly Madison is due to give birth on March 5 and she isn’t the first Hollywood celebrity to eat her placenta after birth.

Mad Men’s January Jones touted about placenta eating as a way to get healthy after giving birth. She told People, “Your placenta gets dehydrated and made into vitamins. It’s something I was very hesitant about, but we’re the only mammals who don’t ingest our own placentas. It’s not witch-crafty or anything. I suggest it to all moms.” January Jones gave birth to son Xander on September 2011.

In order to consume these placenta pills, a woman’s placenta is cleaned, cooked, processed and put into capsule-type pills, said to help new moms nourish their bodies after childbirth and potentially curb postpartum depression.

Eating Placenta Benefits

ABC News reports that Placenta capsulation is not FDA-approved, but it has become extremely popular as pregnant women are turning to practices like midwifery and home births. Despite its nutritional value, the placenta hasn’t been scientifically proven to help any ailments.

With so many women jumping on board with this trend, of eating one’s placenta, companies have started to offer services to process a woman’s afterbirth. Companies will pick up the placenta from the hospital, then steam it, dry it and encapsulate it before returning it to the mom in a few days.

In other reports, people make a dish that would normally contain meat, like stew or lasagna, then replace the meat with placenta.

“There is certainly a potential medicinal use,” Dr. David Katz, founder of the Yale Prevention Center, told ABC News. “This is a time-honored cultural practice of eating the placenta. It is nutrient-rich and a source of hormones.”

The medical term for eating a placenta is called Placentophagy. It’s a method that has been used by the Chinese Culture for an extremely long time and is called Placenta Encapsulation. The placenta is made into a powder and put into pills that you can take over a period of time and get the same benefits as eating a raw placenta.

Holly Madison wrote on her blog about the desire of placenta eating. The former Playboy model wrote on Wednesday, Feb. 27, “This might sound gross, but I’m totally planning on having my placenta turned into pills I can take after giving birth.”

She’s been in the nesting process with working on her daughter-to-be’s nursery in her Las Vegas home, which will have an Alice in Wonderland theme. “Making progress painting my nursery, I wonder if I will finish in time,” states Holly Madison.
