Well I just had to give it a try and see how much everyone was going to go crazy from Winter Storm Q. The name Winter Storm Q was graciously given it’s name by The Weather Channel. The snow storm is getting ready to slam into the Midwest dropping as much as 24 inches of snow in some parts.
I actually live in the Kansas City area around a suburb named Overland Park, KS and decided to take some pictures of the local Wal-Mart’s grocery area. It’s quite stunning what a pile of snow, some sleet and the media can whip people up into buying. There wasn’t anyone piled up with snow shovels, but most of the salt in the front of Wal-Mart was gone.
So what kinds of things do people buy up when they’re afraid of a potential blizzard coming into town when they haven’t seen snow in awhile? Well, apparently it’s things like hot dog buns, bagged lettuce, all loafs of bread, chicken, most types of beef, cereal, organic milk, very specific cheeses and toilet paper. I also noticed an abnormal amount of grape jelly, ramen noodles, Mac & Cheese and Great Value Cottage Cheese gone too.
Now to be completely honest, not all of the bread was wiped out. There were some different varieties left of bread. That was a psychology trip down the consumer lesson lane. There were wheat breads & more designer type loafs that were left and then the really cheap loafs of bread. I also noticed that the Great Value Pretzels were completely sold out too, but a shelf stocker was frantically trying to get more back on the shelf. I just had to grab my own bag of pretzels, the empty shelf was convincing enough! Either way, it was quite entertaining to see people whipped up into a frenzy over the snow that hasn’t landed yet in Kansas City.
You might be wondering why I was there in Wal-Mart to see all this happen? I wanted to see how many people were out to get backup supplies. Now you have great pictures to see what Snow Storm Q is doing for the grocery economy of the Midwest. Snowed in for one day, then you might as well buy enough for for five is apparently how America sees potential snow storm logic. Do you have pictures you want to share of store shelves? Let us know in the comments and we’ll add them.
