Board games can provide family, friends, and even strangers with tons of energy, excitement, and just all around fun. There are a handful of board games that have been around for decades and somehow are still very popular in this day and age. The games that come to mind are Candy Land, Sorry, Clue, and Monopoly. My favorite has always been Monopoly basically because it deals with money, strategy, and some pretty cool tokens you can use to move around the board, but as time has change, so has the game of Monopoly.
The cool popular Scottie dog game piece will now officially have a feline enemy to chase around the board. As toy maker company Hasbro, announced Wednesday on the Today Show that the new game piece will be a cat.
The company conducted a month long nation-wide fan vote online on Facebook to vote for the newest game piece on the Monopoly board, which marks the first time that fans have had a say on which of the eight tokens to add and which one to toss. Fans had the choice between a helicopter, a diamond ring, a robot, a guitar, and a cat according to Yahoo.
“We put five new tokens out for our fans to vote on and there were a lot of fans of the many different tokens, but I think there were a lot of cat lovers in the world that reached out and voted for the cat to be the new token for Monopoly,” vice president for Hasbro gaming marketing Jonathan Berkowitz said.
Berkowitz was right, it appears there are a lot of people that love cats. The cat game piece choice won ina runaway fashion totaling over 30% percent of the fan vote making cat lovers a little excited.
“We know that cat lovers around the world will be happy to welcome the new cat token into the Monopoly game,” senior vice president and global brand leader for Hasbro Gaming Eric Nyman said.
There was amazing participation for this, as fans from over 120 countries cast their votes over the month span opening according to Huffington Post.
Unfortunately, with the new addition of our other fury friend it meant that one of the classic game pieces were on the cutting board to get axed and retired from the game. Fans also got the choice to vote on which game piece should get cut, the Iron, Boot, and Wheelbarrow were the least popular tokens among all the classic pieces and were up to get axed. All three of them were actually deadlocked up until Tuesday night, until haters of the iron pushed it overboard to make the iron the one to get rid of.
“While we’re a bit sad to see the iron go, the cat token is a fantastic choice by the fans and we have no doubt it will become just as iconic as the original tokens,” Eric Nyman said.
The cat will make its debut in the game in a version that’s expected to hit store shelves in the United States in mid- to late-2013.
