Jailbreak iOS 6.1 is Available for Multiple iPhones And iPad Models

iOS 6 Untethered Jailbreak

Apple released the iOS 6.1 update for its devices on January 28th, 2012. One week later, the Evad3rs team has released a jailbreak for the new mobile operating system.

Estimates for the updated OS are somewhere around 13 to 15 million installations in that first week. A major factor is this update being available OTA or Over The Air. Users can check for the update without plugging into a computer via a USB cable or using iTunes. Check out more details on the process of upgrading your device on a previous post.

The evasion tools is available now and is working on the iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, iPhone 3GS, iPad mini, iPad 3rd and 4th generation, Apple TV 2’s and also the newest iPod touch models running iOS6+. Similar to the iOS 6.1 upgrade, this jailbreak is considered wireless or untethered because users do not have to connect to computers to boot devices after the jailbreak is in place.

Some older tethered jailbreaks mean that each time users want to reboot their phone they need to have it hooked up psychically to a computer to apply the jailbreak again. This is a cumbersome task if a reboot is required while out and about or if the phone crashes and reboots on its own.

It does look like a fairly simple for most novice users and will take less than 10 minutes for a total installation. As long as you have Mac OS X (10.5 or newer) or a Windows computer with a minimum of XP you can get started. It should be noted that any version of Linux should also be compatible. The evasi0n site has the needed software up and free of charge with an option to donate via Paypal.

The team at iDownloadblog has uploaded a video walk through if you need any assistance.

Some users that are new to jailbreaking might be scared off by the name or the hacking type of work. It is a lot easier now than it once was and it simply allows users gain root access to the core iOS operating system. Once this is complete, users have the ability to download many applications outside of the official iTunes store from Apple. Simple tweaks like changing the systems default browser to Google’s Chrome are also available.

Jailbreaking is also 100% legal in the US under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Apple of course frowns upon the act as it allows users to purchase and use apps outside of their paid walled garden. The warranty can be violated by the jailbreak, but undoing a jailbreak is as simple as the original process.

Have you jailbroken your iDevice yet?
