Christmas is all about the spirit of giving gifts to those you care about and those you love. Athletes in general, get labeled as being selfish and only look out for them; however, there are still a handful of athletes that display tremendous generosity that get overlooked.
Texan star Wide Receiver Andre Johnson has continually proved to be a role model for both youth children and adolescents with his on field play, and off field charity work. In fact, he has his own charitable foundation called the Andre Johnson charitable foundation which started back in 2003.
The foundation is a non-profit organization that focuses on giving back to the community, and showcasing the positive lifestyles and contribution of professional athletes.
What might be the best thing about this organization is the overwhelming commitment it has in empowering and developing youth from single-parent houses, and helping them become reasonable and educated citizens. The gracious work from Johnson and his organization is always displayed in full effect around this time of the year.
On Tuesday, December 4, Johnson put on what is now the annual Toys”R” Us shopping spree for at risk youth in the Houston Texas area. He also does similar events in his hometown of Miami, Florida. For the Toys”R” Us shopping spree Johnson let 12 children, selected by Child Protective Services, have 80 seconds to fill up their carts with as many toys as they could according to Yahoo.
The 12 children that were allowed to participate in the event had all suffered from parental abuse of some kind and currently live with an extended family member. Even though there young kids ranging from ages just under 10 to teenagers, when shopping they all got gifts not just for themselves, but for siblings and other relatives. The youngsters may have only had 80 seconds to grab anything they wanted, but that made sure to make every second count.
“You hear a minute and twenty seconds, and you don’t think that’s a long time, but you’d be surprised by what these kids can actually put into their buckets,” Johnson said in a statement.
When it was all said and done and the total was tallied up the kids grabbed $19,521 worth of toys according to Business Insider. Johnson’s fun loving self could be seen in pictures with the gigantic size receipts from the shopping spree, still sporting a big smile for the kids.
“I think this is probably my favorite charity event to do and something I always look forward too, because you get to see the kids really enjoy it and that is what this season is all about,” Johnson said
“The Kids are happy they get what they want for Christmas and that is all that matters to me,” Johnson said.
This story may not be heavily covered on CNN, ESPN, or NBC but it is still nice to know athletes like Johnson can give at risk youths a very Merry Christmas.
