Sports Illustrated Sportsman of the Year 2012 Award Goes to Lebron James

Every year around this time the popular Sports Illustrated magazine announces its choice of the “Sportsman of the Year” award. With a remarkable and unbelievable stellar 2012 from various athletes in multiple sports it would appear the decision to choose just one athlete would be a tough one.

However, editors at SI believed one man stood far above all other competitors and had one of the best year’s an athlete could ever have. In an overwhelming unanimous decision, SI announced today that Miami heat forward and USA basketball star Lebron James is this year’s Sportsman of the year. This award was actually an award James somewhat unexpectedly thought he would win.

“I figured what happened in 2010 would still hold me back; I remember it like it was yesterday feeling like the roof caved in on me. To see that I and my team and everyone around me was able to patch that roof up, to come to this point and receive such a prestigious award, it’s huge,” James said in a statement to the press.

With James winning the award it marks the first time in six years that a NBA player will grace the cover as sportsman of the year, with Teammate Dwayne Wade being the last NBA player to do so back in 2006. This will be James 18th time on the cover of SI which in itself is a pretty impressive feat.  When you think about how far he has come from first bursting onto the magazine in 2002 when they labeled him ” The chosen one”, it is rewarding to see how he has lived up to the hype and has become one of the more dominate sports figure in America.  Time Inc.

Sports Group editor Paul Fichtenbaum mentioned that they did not choose James just based on his remarkable year, but a combination of that and all of his charitable events he does in Ohio especially in his hometown of Akron.

“I do think there has been some sort of closure for James, maybe not entirely in Cleveland, but across the nation for sure. LeBron’s jerseys are now the No. 1-selling jerseys in the world I think there’s a reason for that, I think people really appreciate him for everything he can do,” Fichtenbaum said in a statement.

There is a good reason his Jersey is the most popular one now, let’s just look back at the year James had and all that he accomplished. He finally broke through his NBA finals drought and won his first NBA championship, along with being named NBA finals MVP, and League MVP. When the Olympics rolled around he helped lead team USA to another Olympic Gold medal. Seems like an outstanding year for a NBA player in fact what James did have only been matched by arguably the best player to ever play the game.. Micheal Jordan.

Let’s not forget some other athletes that had a tremendous year also like Olympic sensations Micheal Phelps, Usain Bolt, Gabby Douglas, Missy Franklin, and various members of team sports for USA in the Olympics. Tennis star Roger Federer went on to captured his seventh Wimbledon title, Miguel Cabrera became baseball’s first Triple Crown winner in 45 years, Lionel Messi achieving marks only set by Pele. The list can go on for athletes that had a successful, phenomenal year. Do you think SI made the right decision by choosing James?

LeBron James Named Sportsman Of The Year

“It gets no better for a basketball player,” says Heat guard Dwyane Wade of the year James just completed: NBA champion, NBA MVP, Finals MVP, Olympic gold medalist, hardwood revolutionary. Call him the best point guard in the league, or the best power forward, or both, or neither. “He has no position,” says an NBA scout. “His position is to do whatever he wants. There’s never been anything like it. You just give him the ball and you win the game.” Defend James with bigger players and he pulls them out to the three-point line so he can breeze past them.
