Nintendo has a new product for the holiday season with its Wii U console, but is the company preparing a new Wii mini? Best Buy Canada has an online ad showing a black and red Wii with a “Coming Dec 7, 2012″ date beside it. There are no specs, but with the recent price drops on the regular Wii it should come in at an even lower price point.
Nintendo made the Mini official just a few hours after the Best Buy ad came online. The Wii Mini is a Canadian exclusive for now and it will be available on December 7th. For the $100 price point, you do lose a few features from the original Wii. For starters, it does not have internet access and that will obviously knock out the Netflix ability.
GameCube compatibility is also lost with the new budget version, which was found on a few of the original variants. Family’s on a budget this holiday season will have another option besides the new Wii U and its higher price point. Will the lack of internet connectivity be a deal breaker for some? Of course, but being a 1/3rd of the price of the new Wii U and $50 cheaper than the current Wii it offers a budget gaming option for some.
The new Wii U managed only 400,000 units sold in its first week and did have a few bugs out of the gate. This is Nintendo’s first new console in 6 years and it starts at $299 with 23 available games. A deluxe version is available for $350 that includes 32GB of storage and adds the new Nintendo land game. The console is a completely new design for Nintendo and includes a 6.2” touch screen Game Pad that can be used with regular game play. Read more about it here.
Earlier this year, for the first time since Nintendo has been a public company, it posted a loss on its yearly fiscal earnings. Sales of the new 3DS were primarily to blame, but also the aging original Wii has had price cuts and was seeing its sales numbers fall to the newer consoles. The 3DS launched at $250 with very poor sales. Nintendo dropped the price to $170 and sales began to pick up, but not as much as needed to make up for the slow start. The new Wii U will attempt to bring the Japanese company back to a profitable gaming player.
Wii Mini Console Launching in December
Nintendo is planning to release a smaller, redesigned Wii next month according to a leaked retailer report.
