While the world waited anxiously for the presidential results to come in, media coverage of Election Day 2012 was on all the news networks. Each network had their own creative way of showing voting results for each state and how many electoral votes each candidate had in order to reach the goal of 270.
However, it seems that ABC News coverage became popular and had more people following Diane Sawyer’s news cast than other networks, according to those on Twitter that night. Unfortunately for Sawyer, the reason for the attention was due to her odd behavior during the night’s coverage and many had tweeted they felt the way she was acting was due to her being drunk.
With the Twitter universe always being filled with comments about one topic or another, Diane Sawyer’s weird behavior she displayed during her coverage of Election Day 2012 became one of the hot topics. The rumor was that Sawyer’s behavior had to do with her being drunk. One reason for the assumption was due to her voice, which she would talk loud and somewhat slow, and her fixation on the network’s patented results music.
At one point around 10 p.m. EST, she said, “OK, I wanna—can we have our music, because this is another big one here? Minnesota, we’re ready to project Minnesota, rrright now. … Well, tonight we know that President Barack has won Minnesota.” She rambled on, stumbling over the president’s name and even calling President Obama “Barack Orama” for a moment.
As a result, comments on Twitter exploded as people tweeted jeering explanations for her behavior. Some that were said were: “A bit tipsy,” “hammered” or “on pain killers, muscle relaxers, benzos or some combination.” Josh Groban joined in by tweeting, “I’ll have what Diane Sawyer is having” while Ricki Lake tweeted, “And Diane Sawyer declares tonight’s winner is…..chardonnay!”
Others that tweeted had a different reason for Sawyer’s unusual behavior. They joked that Sawyer acted fun-loving because it was a ploy staged by ABC in order to boost viewership. If so, it worked as some Twitter followers said they went to watch the network because the word was that Sawyer was acting, according to one description, “a bit wacky.”
How did Diane Sawyer take the news about being said she was drunk as well as the other comments? As of Wednesday at 1:30 p.m., Sawyer acknowledged all the chatter going on about her by tweeting: “Read your tweets the good, bad, and the funny. See you on @ABCWorldNews.” While Sawyer obviously brushed off what others thought about her “performance” last evening, one tweeter’s comment had a different interpretation of Election Night 2012. “Bad night for Romney, worse night for Diane Sawyer?”

Co-anchoring ABC News’ coverage on Tuesday, the veteran journalist struck a different manner from her practiced, straight-news-delivering style.
Sawyer spoke more slowly than usual while seeming to prop herself on outstretched arms at the anchor desk she shared with George Stephanopoulos.
