Samsung Galaxy S III Outsells Apple iPhone 4S in Third Quarter

Samsung Galaxy S3 vs iPhone 5

Samsung Galaxy S III has taken the lead over Apple iPhone 4S as the world’s best-selling smartphone, for the third quarter of 2012.

Boston-based Strategy Analytics released on Thursday that the Samsung Galaxy S III shipped 18 million units in the third quarter of this year. Meanshile, Apple iPhone 4S, shipped 16.2 million units. To put that into percentages, this gives the Samsung Galaxy S III a 10.7 percent market share, compared to 9.7 percent for the iPhone 4S, as mentioned by ZDNet.

It’s believed that these numbers are because many people were holding off to buy the Apple iPhone 5 which was launched on September 21, just nine days before the closing of the sales quarter.

Neil Shah, Senior Analyst at Strategy Analytics said, “The Galaxy S3 captured an impressive 11 percent share of all smartphones shipped globally and it has become the world’s best-selling smartphone model for the first time ever. A large touchscreen design, extensive distribution across dozens of countries, and generous operator subsidies have been among the main causes of the Galaxy S3’s success.”

The party for Samsung taking the lead over Apple may be short lived because of the iPhone 5. Apple already sold an estimate 6 million units at the end of the third quarter.

Still, on Monday, Samsung confirmed that it has now sold over 30 million of their Galaxy S III smartphones overall. Samsung first revealed the Galaxy S III during a London press event in May. It landed in Europe later that month, and made its debut in the U.S. in June on all major carriers. With having a broad release to all major carriers, Samsung was able to reach a larger audience. Whereas Apple, only releases their products to “suitable carriers.”

Even with the iPhone 5 already selling millions, it will be interesting to see how the battle works out between Apple and Samsung. With the legal issues still raw, the Galaxy profile was raised considerably. The Washington Post reported that the company recently announced that even its Galaxy Note II, a 5.5-inch device that serves a very particular niche of smartphone consumers, sold 3 million units in a little over a month.
