Comedian and actor Eddie Murphy was in Beverly Hills, California Friday night for Spike TV’s “Eddie Murphy: One Night Only.” It was a tribute to the funnyman, now 51-years-old, which will air on Spike TV on November 14th showcasing familiar stars giving touching anecdotes as well as in the audience. While everyone there came to see and pay tribute to Murphy, many seemed to focus their attention towards his date and girlfriend, model Paige Butcher.
Murphy, for the past month, has been seen with the 33-year-old Australian model out dining at places such as Mastro’s Steakhouse in Los Angeles. Butcher was born in Perth, Western Australia, and ended up growing up in the Perth suburb of Attadale. Her modeling career includes the cover of Maxim in 2004. She has also appeared in films such as “Something’s Gotta Give” in 2003 and a small part in 2006’s movie “Big Momma’s House 2.” There has been speculation that Murphy and Butcher met during the shooting of Murphy’s “Big Momma’s House 2.”
Butcher and Murphy could be seen holding hands as they hit the carpet Friday night before entering Spike TV’s tribute to him. During the tribute, everyone in the audience watched and listened to touching anecdotes from Russell Brand, Arsenio Hall, Adam Sandler, Stevie Wonder and Tracy Morgan. Others that appeared to the tribute included famous stars Jamie Foxx and Samuel L. Jackson.
Born April 3, 1961, Edward Regan “Eddie” Murphy started out as a stand-up-comedian and achieved public recognition when he appeared on “Saturday Night Live.” He became a regular cast member from 1980-1984 and worked his stand-up routines so well that Murphy ranked No. 10 on Comedy Central’s list of the 100 Greatest Stand-ups of All Time.
Once hitting the big screen, Murphy made several movies in which he received Golden Globe nominations for his roles in The Nutty Professor, 48 Hrs, Trading Places and the Beverly Hills Cop series. In 2007, he ended up winning a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of soul singer James “Thunder” Early in the movie “Dreamgirls.”
One of the surprises of the evening came when Murphy addressed the audience and insisted that he is officially retired. He told the crowd, “I’m just a retired old song and dance man. That’s what you do when you’re retired: You come out every now and then and talk about the old days.”
