The more I read about athletes getting into trouble with the law the more I feel they should be banned from drinking alcohol. Though not every athlete has problems staying out of trouble after consuming alcohol, it seems a good number of legal issues they face stem from drinking too much. Two recent examples deal with arrests that happened while under the influence of alcohol.
The first is Atlanta running back Michael Turner, who early Tuesday morning, was pulled over for excessively speeding and charges with DUI. The other example is what happened to Olympic gold medalist Shaun White while he was at the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel on Sunday morning. The charges he is facing occurred while, of course, under the influence of alcohol; in other words, he was drunk.
According to the Nashville Metro Police Department, White has been charged with public intoxication and vandalism after breaking a phone and pulling a fire alarm at a Nashville hotel. He was arrested after trying to escape from the hotel in a cab and was kicking a hotel guest that was trying to stop him.
The police report said the 26-year-old “appeared to be extremely intoxicated and smelled strongly of alcohol.” Also, police said his “eyes were red and bloodshot.” Police responded to a call from the Loews Vanderbilt Hotel at 2 a.m. on Sunday describing a drunken man, who was later identified as Shaun White, pulling a fire alarm that forced the hotel to evacuate all of the guests.
An employee said he saw White destroy a hotel phone. When White was trying to flee from the hotel in a cab, a hotel guest tried to stop him by telling the driver that he notified the police and that they were on the way. The report said that, “Once the guest told Mr. White that he called the police, Mr. White attempted to attack the man and fell and hit his head.”
Police said that White was taken to the hospital to have his head injury checked. After doctors said he was fine and released him, White was then arrested by police. White’s mug shot released by police shows White with a black eye and he was later released on Monday on his own recognizance.Oct. 10th is when he is scheduled to appear in court.
Though the guest did not press charges against White, his arrest stems from the misdemeanor charges that happened after he refused to sign a citation. When reached by the Associated Press, White’s manager had no immediate comment. Shaun White won a gold medal at the 2006 Olympics in Turin and at the Vancouver Games in 2010.
He is an action superstar being he skateboards during the summer and snowboards during the winter. He is a multimillionaire with a signature video game, a clothing line and expanded last year with a company that sells BMX bikes, skateboards and other equipment. He also has been given the nickname “The Flying Tornado” for his distinctive red hair.
