Lance Armstrong Stripped of Titles from Tour de France After Refusing Doping Allegations

Lance Armstrong Tour de France

Lance Armstrong has accomplished a lot in the sport of Cycling and has battled through testicular cancer tremendously well and has defined the odds in life. Unfortunately, the dark cloud of performing enhancing drugs has been hanging over his career for years and now a lifetime banned has ended his cycling career.

On August 24, 2012 the United States Anti-Doping Agency finally decided on a very long and drawn out issue with cycling super star Lance Armstrong as they will strip him of his 7 Tour de France titles, while also banning him from the sport for life.

Armstrong decided not to appeal their decision mentioning that he is just emotionally worn out of proving time after time that he has been clean throughout his career and tired of all the allegations so he decided just to give up trying to make his name clean.

“There comes a point in every man’s life when he has to say that enough is enough, for me that time is now. I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in winning my seven Tours since 1999.” Armstrong said in a statement to multiple news sources.

The interesting fact is that over the decade or so that Lance was racing not once did he fail a drug test, but at the same time a few of his teammates went public to criticize him telling people he was doping. In the perspective of the cycling world, it appears that Lance was cheating the game but just did not get caught somehow.

“It is a sad day for all of us who love sport and our athletic heroes, this is a heartbreaking example of how the win-at-all-costs culture of sport, if left unchecked, will overtake fair, safe and honest competition,” USADA chief executive  Travis Tygart.

When it came down to the federal court decision this week that heavily favored the USADA in determining the drug testing of procedures for Lance Armstrong, Lance felt compelled to voice his opinion on this matter.

“If I thought for one moment that by participating in USADA’s process, I could confront these allegations in a fair setting and put these charges to rest, I would jump at the chance, but I refuse to participate in a process that is so one-sided and unfair.” Armstrong said in a statement to the press.

The stripping of his titles and lifetime ban is now a dark stain on the famous bright yellow shirt of not only a cycling great but a hero and role model to youth, and adults all over the country. The USADA may have taken away everything that Lance had worked years for, but in his eyes he will always have those titles, and memories.

“I played by the rules that were put in place by the UCI ( Union Cyclist International) and USADA when I raced, I know who won those seven Tours, my teammates know who won those seven Tours, and everyone I competed against knows who won those seven Tours.” Armstrong said.
